Do tanning salons provide a safer tan?

No. Since the early 1980s, when tanning salons were promoted as a safer alternative to sun exposure, it has become apparent that UVA light—typically the tanning salon's source of light—is damaging to the skin. It is now known that both UVB and UVA light can cause burning, photoaging and the skin changes associated with skin cancer. As of September 1986, the FDA required manufacturers of tanning devices to apply a warning label on all machines.
