Mix 2 oz of Ion™ Color Brilliance™ Ammonia Free Permanent Crème Hair Color with 3 fl oz. Ion Ammonia Free Developer. A preliminary strand test is always recommended prior to application, especially if the hair is porous or previously chemically treated. If you are unsure which shade to choose, start with a lighter shade. Standard mixing ratio is 1:1.5, however for resistant gray coverage mix 1:1.Must be mixed with Ion Color Brilliance Ammonia Free Developer. All instructions are based on average hair texture. If the hair is fine or coarse adjustments should be made accordingly. Fine hair is more receptive to hair coloring where coarse hair is not.

Always read the product packaging and inserts for complete directions, instructions, and warnings, and make sure to perform both the strand test and the patch test before applying your color.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Works good! I bought the dark brown and it works well. Its a little clumpy but workable.. Would buy again. August 29, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ion Color I am extremely allergic to phenylenediamine so decided to try Ion color with no PPD. It colored the grey roots nicely as it is so thick you can go right up to the roots without it getting on your scalp. Usually the day or two after other colors I have a bad reaction even without it getting on my scalp. This however seems to work very well and I have had little or no reaction. I still won't put it on my scalp as a precaution, but it is easier to get very close to the roots. Also, my hairdresser taught me the trick to the consistency issue. He mixed it with 1 beater with an electric mixer and it blends it perfectly. Nice and creamy and no problem applying. I am sticking with this color....thank you Ion for taking out the PPD....it was severely harming me! June 21, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by FANTASTIC! I naturally have very light blonde hair and I thoroughly enjoy being a redhead. The only downside was all the damage that it was doing! My hair is also very curly/wavy and the constant dyeing ruined that. So I switched to the 7RR ammonia free hair dye and never looked back. Now my hair is back to its lusciousness it had before. I wouldn't think about using anything else. The only problem with this product is the funky consistency that makes it thick and difficult to mix. With that in mind, always be sure that you mix it properly and use the correct developer! You have to use the ammonia free developer. June 1, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ion Permenant Hair Color I've done my own hair for a long time. I've used Ion forever and love it. The color lasts and makes your hair look healthy and shiny. It's easy to use. March 9, 2015

That is why I love this stuff - you can mix what you need. If you want to do your whole head then do it -but if you feel that some root work needs to be done then just do that and only mix a small amount. Just know that eventually you should do an all over to even out.

Not For Those Whose Hair Pulls Red

I don't know if a drabber will work with this. I was using an 8NN, not a 10, but below is my experience.

I recently had a hair color emergency. Having more than 50% white hair, I was finding the Ion 8A I had used for years wasn’t holding well on the white. My natural hair color is a red based dishwater blonde with fine texture.

I got a most unfortunate recommendation (for my hair type) to use the Ion 8NN as this is formulated for resistant greys even though I said my hair pulled red fiercely even with an ash color + the Ardell Red Gold Corrector. For those whose hair doesn’t pull red this badly, the NN may be a great solution for resistant greys. My hair not only pulled red the worst it ever has, but also was about 3 shades darker than an 8. Ion color customer service advised to NOT use any of the NNs as they would pull red on my type of hair & to use a N + A color to cover grey as the ash color alone wouldn’t cover grey adequately.

To begin to remedy this predicament I used the Salon White bleach in a bleach shampoo, equal parts bleach powder, shampoo, & 20 developer. In 20 minutes, this pulled out the dark color & extreme redness, but left me an odd pinky, orangish, gold that wasn’t a desired color. I was told to expect the bleach to leave an orangy color. The color level was back to an 8. This was followed with a week of strong conditioners.

I had 3 Sally recommendations on how to return to my desired color. The one I used that worked splendidly, leaving my hair the best lovely natural color I’ve had in years with no red, but just some beautiful gold undertones was to add 2 capfuls of Wella Cooling Violet Additive to equal parts Wella 8A & 9N + 2 parts 20 developer. I sprayed the Neutral Protein Filler on dry hair 20 minutes prior to coloring.

It is likely that the Ion Ash Intensifier could also be used to remedy the pulling red too much. I was told the Ion Ash Intensifier is a fairly new product, & it seemed that everyone was a bit hesitant about recommending how much needed to be used, but under this item is a customer review who also pulled red badly, & she loves it.
