Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product!!... if you know how to do it! Okay so I am writing the most detailed review I can because I know how much I research hair dyes (especially demis, which always deposit so dark) and I'm posting this everywhere I can so as many people as possible see it! (If you see it more than once this is why). So I have dyed my hair with Demi's on and off when I would get sick of my highlights for the last 3 years. This is the FIRST TIME I have ever got it to be the color I wanted it to be. My hair is naturally about a 6 neutral (except dull, dull, dull). I currently had a full head of professionally-done highlights that originally were a true natural 8. I got them done 2 months ago, and since its summer, they have definitely bleached out and turned brassy, despite my purple shampoo efforts. My hair is very prone to brassiness no matter what I do. Hate it. My goal tonight was to darken it to between a level 6-7 neutral, so I didn't look so unnatural anymore. So here's what I did: I decided I'd have to use a level 8 to get to around a 6 since it deposits so dark, so I went to Sally's and bought Ion 7NA and 9NA. (Natural ash to combat the brassiness). I had read that mixing two colors like that makes a more dimensional hair color than just getting a 8NA. I would guess that's optional, but I was feeling creative. I mixed the colors and added the correct amount of developer and mixed, mixed, mixed (it pretty much filled my coloring bowl). Since I never know how Demi's are going to deposit on my hair, I decided to only do the underneath of my hair first, so if it ended up super dark per usual, I would still have highlights up top. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THAT TO EVERYONE!!!!!! I tied up the top half of my hair and applied the dye to the bottom half REALLY REALLY REALLY quickly. I said screw the applicator brush and just used my gloved-hands. Took me 2 minutes at most to have it fully saturated. My hair processes dye so quickly so I knew I had to watch it intently. I waited about 3 minutes after I applied it all, then took a piece of toilet paper and wiped a strand clean of dye. I could see the dye had already taken hold and was darkening quick, so I immediately jumped in the shower and rinsed only the bottom half, leaving the top half tied up and dry. I got out and blew dried it, sure enough, a PERFECT 6!! I decided it was safe to move to the top, so I tied the bottom half in a tiny bun at the base of my neck and separated the hair that hadn't been dyed yet into 2 parts - one on each side of my head. (Yes I realize I'm being super detailed but this is the sort of review I was looking for so I'm hoping someone will get use out of the meaningless details.) I also picked just a couple tiny strands out of each side and tied them back with the little bun so I could keep "peek-a-boo" highlights, which I really love, but that's not at all necessary to get good results. I took my regular hair brush, dumped some dye on it, rubbed it around so the whole brush was covered, and I started brushing it through my hair. I didn't drench my hair in dye by any means, just a very thin layer of it. The instant I was done applying this with the brush - took about 45 seconds - I jumped in the shower and started rinsing. REALLY glad I did, because just those 45 seconds were enough for the top part of my hair to look like a 6 base with 7 highlights. Now my whole head is neutral. That's what I was hoping for by using my hair brush instead of making sure every strand was saturated. The approx. 60 seconds it took for me to apply it/start the shower and get in was just enough to tone down the brassiness! Now my entire head was neutral at long last. The final result: it looks like a prettier version of my natural hair color, a 6 neutral, but with level 7 VERY subtle and blended highlights. If I didn't know any better, I would think the highlights are natural! Absolutely over the moon!!! So happy! I dare to say this is the best my hair has ever looked, I can't stop looking at it. So I am torn on how many stars to give this, since I got these great results, but if I would have left it on for the full 20 minutes I can only imagine how dark my hair would be right now. Oh well, Demi is as Demi does, so I suppose I'll give 4 stars. Its a great product if you know to be INCREDIBLY careful, buy 2 shades lighter than you want, and not take your eyes off of it for even a second! Godspeed my hair-dying friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great texture and shine, good coverage I'm a strawberry blond, starting to get very gray around my face, and not ready to not be a redhead yet. I started out using the 6RC (dark copper blond) but it's too dark and pinkish -- fun but not natural. It's taken a little fiddling to get a match to my natural color but I think I've done it, and maybe this will help others. A craft or kitchen scale is essential here -- you need to be able to measure carefully. I use 2 parts 10NG (lightest natural golden blond) to 1 part 6RC (dark copper blond) and 3 parts 10 developer. In grams, 10:20:30 is enough for short, thick hair. I leave it 20-25 minutes with no heat, using the Ion pre-color treatment and their after-color treatment too. The results are shiny and smooth -- my coarsest grays are still visible, but much improved in texture, and my finer grays are covered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING hair gloss I just bought this and tried it out today. It is an absolutely amazing product. I got mine in the shade 00 / Clear. I got this to refresh my dull , frizzy, curly, and highlighted hair. My hair was so dry and flat looking and, needed something to make my hair look shinier and healthy. My boyfriend's sister- in-law's hair always looks so shiny and amazing and, she swears by her hair gloss. I bought this and 10 vol developer and applied it to my dry hair. I waited 15 minutes.. the first 10 minutes I applied heat to my hair w/ my blow dryer to intensify/give me the best results. The last 5 minutes, I allowed my hair to cool down before rinsing. I rinsed my hair in the shower with water... then followed up using my regular shampoo and conditioner. I then proceeded to blow dry my hair straight. My hair hasn't looked this shiny and healthy in a while, and i am absolutely in love with my results. I will definitely buy this again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Gray Coverage! I changed from Loreal to Ion about three years ago now. My natural hair color is black, so the Ion black works for me. I have been very pleased with product change. My gray coverage lasts about 4-6 shampoos. I use the Ion shampoo for color treated hair also. I will be using this product for many years to come.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too dark if you're blonde. My natural roots were between 7A-8A (according to colour swatches). The rest of my hair was a very golden level 9, from previous dyes. I wanted to take it down to my root level, so I mixed a 9A with half of a 7A with 10volume developer. It came out a medium ashy brown. It's not a bad colour per se, but it's not what I was going for. I don't want to lighten my hair because it has taken a lot of abuse throughout the years... *Sigh* I guess I'm going to have to be a brunette for a while now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth it I purchased 6W Warm blonde, but went back and forth for about 20 minutes not sure if this was the right color for me. Going off of previous review, it was a color that was 2x lighter than my own. But I was nervous that this was going to be too light. Thankfully, it turned out PERFECT!! I had medium to dark brown hair with some gray becoming very noticeable. This covered all of the gray and gave me a warm brown color. It almost looks like a hint of red in the right light, but really flattering. I have found a new favorite! Used the developer they suggest and left on 20 minutes with the ratio given in the instructions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST COLOR I'VE EVER USED I have been using Ion demi permanent hair color for over 5 years now and it is the best color I have ever used, once I figured out how it worked with my hair. I have tried almost all the colors from ash blond to medium brown to red and I learned very quickly that anything darker than medium brown turned black on my fine, porous curly hair. There are a few ways to correct this, by either leaving the color on for about 10 minutes (I never leave it on longer than 20) and using a 1:2 ratio of color to developer. I only had this problem with the browns, the reds typically turn out beautifully. I often mix up to four colors together to create custom shades and it works great. The smell is nice, it is not damaging to hair and it leaves hair soft and shiny afterwards. I have even noticed that my seborrhea improves the week following application. I hope they never stop making this product and I plan to continue using it forever!

My hair is a dark brown. I purchased the demi-permanent in burgundy brown. Will that color show up in my hair or do I have to use a permanent color to achieve that look?

Asked by: Tamebowe
Demi permanent color does not strip the color first like permanent color. It just coats the hair. If you have dark hair and want some burgundy color I think using the Demi will create a subtle color shift. I think it's worth a try just make sure you leave it on long enough.

I have extremely naturally blonde hair. For a show I want to achieve a very dark brown, so a Demi-permanten option is perfect for me, but will it actually truly fully come out of my hair after a certain amount of washes?

Asked by: Annemnoble
Yes, depending on your hair. Mine washes out after about 15 washes

Can the 18% Ion ammonia free developer be used instead of the 10% Sensitive scalp developer? Ty

Asked by: Lorri_75
No, I would not use the 18% Ion ammonia free developer with the Ion Demi Creme Color. I would just use the Ion Permanent Creme Color with the 18% developer. That is why we use the 10% developer with the Demi color because it is not permanent and you get less lift and mostly deposit of color.

My stylist recommended a Glaze. I really don't want to pay $100 for it. My hair is pretty much all gray. I have not colored my hair for a year. I was hoping to use a clear glaze to give my hair some body and shine. Can I use a clear glaze on my gray hair?

Asked by: Brendanj
We would actually recommend the ion Color Brilliance Intenstive Shine Semi Permanent Creme Hair Color in Clear instead. Safe, easy to use and no developer needed!

I have a tube of the ion color brilliance intensive shine demi permanent creme hair color, the color is medium neutral blonde I lost the box to my hair color so I don't have the instructions . Can you tell me how to apply this to my hair also for how long

Asked by: Indiangirl
The application can be done with a bowl and brush or applicator bottle if needed. It is mixed with 10 volume Sensitive Scalp developer. Timing is all dependent on your hair texture and porosity. Fine hair processes at the lowest end of timing and coarse hair to the highest end. Always test strand to determine the timing and ensure the shade you have chosen with provide desired results.

Someone told me I could mix Titanium w/ ION color brilliance 00 clear even though Titanium is ready to use and 00 clear requires developer. I questioned this & she said just mix the clear with the developer first then add the Titanium. Can I do this?

Asked by: aliwonder
Are you looking to make Titanium lighter? If so, we have the Brights Clear Dilutor that you would mix to do so. Demi and Semi products are not able to be mixed unfortunately.
