Ardell Gray Magic is a unique way to cover resistant gray hair, and bring vibrancy and intensity to ALL hair color.

Gray Magic Color Additive can be added to ANY color formula to achieve vibrant color and exceptional gray coverage. Formulated to help hair color penetrate deeper into cortex. Is also great for toning down ash (green) tones. Adds "punch" to red hair color formulations and helps to alleviate chlorine discolorations.

Gray Magic work works because gray hair is the result of the loss of red and yellow color pigment. Gray Magic adds concentrate red and yellow with wetting agents to replace the lost color pigment and moisture, to 'lock-in' hair color. When added to shampoos or conditioners, will prevent fading and oxidtation for tinted red or warm colors (10 drops per ounce of shampoo or conditioner).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gray Magic Color Additive Gray Magic Color Additive: I'm one of those people who turned gray early and now in my 50's I'm all gray. My hair color is auburn and always need to use Neutral or Ash or Violet bases to avoid an orange result. So, when I've read that (for some) Gray Magic turns orange I decided to use it with a violet base to get a Rose Gold result. It worked perfectly. One thing to know is the Gray Magic goes on orange, but the longer it processes with the hair color, the hair color comes through. If you freak out over the orange color of Gray Magic and not let it process you may end up with too much orange.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't be afraid to try it! My gray hair is actually a chrome color that is colored Medium Intense brown using Ion 4NN. The roots grow fast so I have to color them every 2 weeks, 3 if I use the Age Beautiful root cover to hide it. The gray is so resistant to color that the new growth turns a coppery light brown instead of the medium brown and is extremely visible. I decided to finally try the Gray Magic and bought the small packet. Upon mixing with my color/developer I was afraid as it turned a pumpkin pie color!! I put it on my roots and then used a bag until time to rinse off. Afterwards I saw the resistant roots were finally medium brown!!! The hair was all the same color! I love this product and will use it every time I color. I can't imagine what took me so long to try it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dont buy the small package get the dropper bottle this stuff is amazing but I have used the small packaged and you really want to trust the directions because that will make it work or not. I have gray hair around my hair line that will not color unless I use this. This helps so I don't have to color every two week.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from really awesome product Being a stylist I am not used to using additives in my color but I tried this and I love it. It covers grey really well and I have very stubborn grey. I recommend this to anyone with this. If you use it right and leave it on the allotted time it works just fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Gray Coverage I have dark brown hair white an unfortunate section of VERY color-resistant white hair. I had been going to a stylist, but even she couldn't get it completely covered. I decided to try myself and pulled out all the stops. I can't say for certain that this Gray Magic did anything, since I didn't try the same process without it, but I can say I am so pleased with the end results, that I will continue to use it and follow the same process. Here is what I did: Washed my hair with Ion Color Defense Clarifying Shampoo (no conditioner) Towel dried and combed through Applied 1oz of Colorful Neutral Protein Filler using Roots Only Comb Applicator Bottle Waited 20 minutes Towel dried and combed through again Applied Vaseline as a barrier cream around face Mixed 1oz Wella Color Charm Liquid Permanent Dye 4NN with 2oz Wella Color Charm Liquid Clear Developer 20 volume and 10 drops Ardell Gray Magic Color Additive Wearing gloves, applied to roots using Roots Only Comb Applicator Bottle and then lathered into ends Waited 45 minutes Added a small amount of water, lathered and then rinsed until water ran clear Shampooed and conditioned as normal Perfection!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No gray coverage at all The grays at my temples were just as obvious with this product as without. So, a waste of money. Just found No Gray (another additive) and 100% gray coverage! woot!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! I have been coloring my hair (covering the gray) for about 10 years. In the last few months, my grays have become very stubborn and resistant to color, no matter what brand of color I used or how long I left the color on. Searched online and bought Gray Magic at Sally after reading the reviews. Used it last night with "drugstore" color and it made SUCH a difference! I purchased the small bottle, rather than the packet that is seen here. It was on sale and I'll have plenty of product for another 4 or 5 colorings, at least. I followed the package directions and mixed a 1-to-1 solution of color and developer, adding 5 drops of the Gray Magic. Yes, it does stain your fingers orange, so put your gloves on when you are ready to add it to the 1-to-1 solution. (However the stain came off after a few hand-washings.) I, too, was apprehensive when the "tint" solution turned orange, but went ahead and painted it on the areas where I have my most stubborn grays (crown and the part in my hair). Then I mixed the remainder of the color and developer, adding 20 drops of Gray Magic. It turned orange too, but after a bit, the color normalized. I applied this mixture to the rest of the hair at the root level on my crown, the more resistant hair on my head. Waited 30 minutes and applied the remaining mixture to the rest of my hair so that the color would be even. The verdict - complete coverage of the gray!! I could see a slight color gradient between the tinted resistant root area and the rest of the hair, but nothing I will complain about. I used a cooler shade of color to compensate for the red tones that other reviewers mentioned. Gray Magic is MAGIC in a bottle!

I'm allergic to ammonia and provide. Can I use this producy

Asked by: Lolabear
There should be a way to click on Ingredients on the Sally web page. Most hair colors contain ammonia and peroxide, so you need to read the labels carefully. I believe there are some semi-permanent hair colors that do not contain ammonia and peroxide. Gray Magic is an additive for PERMANENT HAIR COLOR. I don't know that it will work with semi-permanent hair color.

I want to lighten my medium brown hair 2 to 3 shades lighter. 30-40% grey? I have a medium golden blonde hair color and have another hair color that darkens brown hair up to 3 shades. Can I use either of these shades with the grey magic or will I get red?

Asked by: CGADR557
I am brunette slowly moving to a blonde tone to blend the grey better. I have never had any red effect from using grey magic. It simply helps the color work better on the greys.

The gray magic box says it is compatible with all color tint, toners and non-peroxide hair colors. I use clairol natural instincts. The box says it contains peroxide. Can I use gray magic with this clairol product?

Asked by: SharonHeidi
I would search google to see what experiences anyone else may have had with that combination. I used gray magic with Clairol Nice and Easy and got really good gray coverage that lasted longer than usual. If gray magic says it works with non-peroxide colors or semi permanent colors like Natural Instincts then I would trust it, after my recent experience. Don't freak out that the gray magic comes out of the packet really dark. I was freaked out but it didn't affect my shade (auburn).

Any suggestions? I used this with Nice and easy hair color. It seemed to work. Then on my 1st shampoo (color safe) white hair on my temple was back. Gggrrr I'm at a loss with this stubborn white hair!

Asked by: Deezziie
Nice and Easy is a pretty temporary brand - try L'Oreal that covers for the grays, I have really short hair and I put in about 20 drops of 1/2 bottle of colorant. (I don't ever need a full amount so I split it in two and use only half - but I use a LOT of the Gray Magic). It lasts longer that way.

I don't know what 'bleashing' is (bleaching?), but this works in any semi-permanent or permanent haircolor.

Can this be used with just the developer and no color?  Thx

Asked by: RoseC123
Hello, and thank you for your question. Ardell Gray Magic is a hair color additive, we wouldn't suggest using it without hair color as the directions say to use ten drops for every ounce of hair color.

I want to dye my hair a silver/ gray. What do I use?

Asked by: NatalieStriegel
If your hair is dark you will have to bleach it to get the dark out and then put a secondary color of which ever shade of gray/silver you choose. Color Magic is great for patrons trying to cover their gray hair. I have never used it for silver/gray hair application. If your hair is very light in color then you should be able to apply the silver/gray color of your choice directly to your hair. I hope this helps with your question. Have a great day.

I have a sachet of color additive. Do I mix it with my hair colorant before applying to hair

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, that's what it says to do on the packaging. This stuff turned my hair green, so I personally don't recommend it, but to answer your question, yes, you do add it to your color mix before putting on your hair
