I have very dark brown hair that for over 20 years I have colored platinum blonde using Wella 1210 color and Ion or L'Oreal No. 30 cream developer. I came to this recipe with the help of a Sally Beauty employee in one of their stores 20+ years ago, after I walked in the store bawling, tears streaming down my face, because a friend had told me to use a blonde color and any No 40 devloper they had - and leave it on too long. My hair, that I had spent years growing to my waist, was frizzled and fried beyond repair. I cut my hair all off and started growing it out again, this time following the Sally employees advice and it has been no fail advice for years.
Well, this past couple of years I let my natural dark brown color grow out again and I had forgotton how hard it was to get it platinum blonde in the first place. No 30 developer just wasn't cutting it so I ordered No 40 with great hesitation, vividly recalling my first experience with No. 40 developers and how harsh they can be. I thought I had ordered Ion but I mistakenly ordered this Clairol No. 40 instead. What a beautiful mistake! I mixed it up with My Wella 1210 color, and a few drops of Unred and Gray Magic added to the mix. Let it sit on my hair for about an hour under a processing cap. I couldn't believe, not just the lift that I was looking for, but my hair was in such perfect condition. It didn't dry out, break off, or leave me looking like I had stuck my finger in a light socket. The next month, I repeated the process and I am so pleased with the results. I will continue to use Clairol developer but I will go back to a 30 volume to maintain the color that I have finally achieved. I was so pleased with it that I've also ordered Clairol hair color this time instead of the Wella. I hope to like it as much as I love their developer.

This dev deserves every star received! I think I’ve used almost all of the developers Sally’s carries over the years and this is now hands down my favorite. This along with Basic White took my dyed for 2 years dark brown/blk (switched back and forth) hair to an light orangey color in about 25 minutes. I know, who wants to end up with orange hair?… But it turned out way lighter than I expected which is perfect for yellow I’m trying to achieve to get to platinum. I’ve bleached my hair a few times over the years so I knew what to expect. It’s a thicker crème so it didn’t drip at all (frothy consistency when mixed with BW) and the smell was nothing compared to others, which is a huge plus. I’m so glad I decided to try it! It was definitely a great decision and now I’m hooked!

Love that it doesn't drip as the other creme formula that clariol has. and the smell isn't as strong as the other cremem formula. I had messed up so many clothes because of the other formula. thanks for making this.

I have been using this developer now for over a year. I have been extremely pleased with the color outcome. It is always consistant and my hair just glows after coloring.
