Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nope Bought this to lift the faded dye from my daughter’s hair. Used four packets because her hair is super long and super thick. Mixed according to the directions and immediately was questioning if this was going to work. It did absolutely nothing at all. What a waste of money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did practically nothing I bought this today to remove reminents of semi-permanent red and purple left in my hair. It burned my scalp almost immediately so I left it in the shortest recommended time. My highlights turned slightly less red, but it's still there. Tbh I feel like 4 shampoos (recommended in the instructions) did as much or more than this product did. Yet another Ion product that did NOTHING for my hair. I'm not taking the employee's recommendations anymore, this brand is terrible.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I use alot of different ion products and have never felt disappointed when using them. if i could hive this 0 stars I would. I used it as instructed 4oz of warm water to 1 packet. I ended up using 2 packets because i have alot of hair. Rubbed it in really well, used heat for 40 minutes then washed my hair multiple times and my hair looks the exact same.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not helpful Didn't do anything to the color on the hair only seemed to damage the hair.
Date published: 2020-07-25
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Kinda works I used as directed, even though I thought putting it on wet hair was odd. This did work in the regards that it took out probably the last three months of color (anything near my roots) however i would say I didn't even go down a half color on the rest of my hair.. so if u had a more recent dye job this may work better for you. It smells, just like most products but did leave hair with a nice soft conditioned feeling.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from horrible i used 2 packets and left it on for 45 minutes and it did absolutely nothing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Use Developer I know the package says to use water, but I've tried that before, does nothing for me. I've been using 20 volume developer, and it really helps. My coworker kept recommending that I give it another try.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well I bought this after a Facebook recommendation. Backstory: half of my hair is bleached half was virgin hair color. I went to a salon had them lighten my ends and do a red to rose gold ombre. Turned out scary so I dyed all of it myself with arctic fox poison. After a month it was fading. I've used 3 packets of this. All of my hair is back to the bleached yellow stage I was at before! It works well has 0 smell and doesn't ruin your hair. Im only having issues removing that salon red color. But its slowly working.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great gentle color remover It’s very gentle, works well with warm water Won’t lift completely, but enough to apply fresh toner or new color. Sometimes I do apply a second time if I want to get more lift. I never use peroxide

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Multiple Uses Needed If would like to maintain the integrity of your hair and dont mind spending the time and money, then this is a good product for you. it does remove my semi permamant hair color but it is a slow process with multiple applications. I generally don’t mind this because my hair still feels healthy after using this product. I’ve used other color removers that were basically bleach and really dried my hair out. I can use this product multiple times in a day and my hair is still soft.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Actually got the red out my hair I read multiple reviews before trying this. I put it in, waited about an hour and shampooed 3 times. I was surprised at how much of the red it got out of my hair.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Literally Nothing I have artic fox purple rain over both bleached and natural hair. It did literally nothing to either. I'm insulted Sally's charges over $5 for this trash.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great Worked really well on Arctic Fox color. Even removed most of the yellow dye.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So little. Did barley anything. I got one box today. I’ve had luck with color removal before. But not this. First it comes just like boxed hair dye. Then after I mixed I thought. Huh, seems a little light. I just continued though. Well as you can see from images. I have, very little hair. It was not enough to cover most of my head. Very disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved my life. Bought this in stores a few days ago because I had previously dyed my hair an auburn color with clairol permanent box dye and ended up hating it. after using this product following correct instructions I was literally shocked by how much color it took out. Went from having bright red/orange hair to a yellowish color. Didn’t leave my hair feeling damaged, maybe just a little dry but I highly recommend this for unwanted permanent color!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Don’t hope for a miracle but it works. I was super nervous to try this because I read reviews looking for more instruction and saw that most reviews were negative. However, it did work for me. 1) It absolutely smells like sulfur. I’m not sure how people are saying it doesn’t smell. However, once I put a cap on it was fine and washed right out. It’s not over bearing but does not smell good. 2) The instructions are terribly unclear. I shampooed my hair first with a clarifying shampoo after reading reviews. I towel dried and applied the mixture of one packet to 4oz of water once it was shaken together in an application bottle. I then sat with a heating pad and towel wrapped around my cap for 45 minutes. Rinsed out, shampooed three times and was good. 3) I started with demi-permanent 5m maybe 6r ion color in my hair already. I haven’t dyed it in months and a lot of the color has washed out. However, I feel as if it lifted as close as possible back to my natural 8n/7n color. Definitely still some copper tones but I have blue shampoo I’ve been combating that with and it’s nothing excessive. Overall, I would give it a whirl. But don’t expect insane results. I have read some people used developer and I’m sure that would help lift much more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Use with developer!! This product works when used correctly! I have about 2 years of semi-permanent, level 2 dye build up in my hair. I had to use this product three times with a 20 volume developer, but it took my hair from a level 2 red-violet to a level 6 faint copper color. For the amount of old dye I have in my hair and the dark color it was, I am very impressed! I have tried a lot of color removing methods and this one has worked the best for me so far. I have no doubt that if I used this more times I could get my hair even lighter every time, but I am happy at where three applications got me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from definitely not the best... The product itself removed a little but of color, but not nearly enough to make a difference, and the smell was terribel, i gagged. It smells like throw up and isnt worth it at all
Date published: 2020-06-23
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nothing I had hardly any red dye left in my very short hair(gray underneath). The product did not do anything at all.
Date published: 2020-06-22
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awful!! Awful!! Awful!! Doesn’t work at all! Had blue hair and it didn’t lift at all. Don’t waste your money, really not worth it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Works okay.. I put arctic fox poseídon, purple rain, and wrath in my hair about a month and a half prior to using this product. My hair was pretty faded at this point and I wanted to get the rest out. The blue and purple were virtually unaffected while most of the red came out, but still left me with an orange hue. I would try this product again if it didn't smell so bad, as I've shampooed 3 times and the smell of rotten eggs is still bothering me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great on PERMANENT dye In a pinch to refresh my red without the time to wait for my typical color to be delivered (wella koleston), I went to Sallys and grabbed wella CC 6r and 7r. Apparently these colors are not particularly warm, because my porous (previously bleached) ends turned out way too cool toned, red but more towards violet. I prefer warmer, copper toned reds and this was NOT was I was looking for. Kicking myself for not just leaving it alone until I could get my regular dye, I went back to Sally's to hopefully find something copper based to balance the color or remove it. Glad I chose this. I used it as per directions and my color is incredibly similar to what I had before I used the 6r+7r; a little lighter, but that's because it did a good job. THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS are likely from people who didn't use it correctly (with developer, on demi-perm dyes, expecting too much). While it took the sick red/purple/pink color out, it did not remove the copper red previously deposited on the blonde. Perhaps it works on the process immediately preceding its use. It does its job, but don't expect a miracle. Great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleasantly surprised From reviews I imagine this works best on red shades. I used it to remove the box dye Nutrisse Dark Plum. I don’t have a salon hood dryer so I massaged it in (I have a lot of hair & 1 packet was enough), then I used a regular blow dryer to heat it up. I kept it under a shower cap for the longer recommended time & used the blow dryer to heat it up occasionally. I was pleasantly surprised at how much color it took out! Especially because I didn’t do it just as instructed. It didn’t do anything bad to my hair either, so overall I’m very pleased!

Does developer work better with this product?

Asked by: Ladyluckyspike
It depends on the intended use. For bleaching/lightening purposes developer may work better as they are intentionally added peroxide. Hair color remover is milder and generates some peroxide upon activation with water.

will this take ion semi permanent very faded blue color out my hair

Asked by: morgan05
It's best to use a direct dye lifter. If your not a professional I would see if you can buy DDL by Malibu C. It works everytime.

Does this work on brown hair that was dyed black with box dye?

It will help lift the black but most likely you will need a more powerful remover or lightener. For professional advice on this product please contact the ion Help Line at 1-800-859-3112. Our hotline is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm CST Monday – Friday.

I bleached my hair and I dyed it over with Arctic Fox Poseidon color. And I wanna get rid of the color but would you recommend this or something else ?

Asked by: Lizzzzzzzz
Yes. i love Ion Hair color remover. Works like magic! buy a couple packets.. Your're going to need more than one. Also, have patience... over time, and when u wash your hair, the shampoo will eventually strip the color out of it anyway. Never fear, the color WILL come out!! You could always bleach over too to strip it back to an empty canvas.
