Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great kit if you know what you're doing!READ BELOW So I bought this despite all of the negative reviews. I am not a professional hair stylist, but I have 10+ years of personal experience dying and bleaching my hair at home. I have naturally jet black hair, so dying it blond can be very difficult and nerve-wracking because a lot can go wrong. I used this lightening kit yesterday to touch-up my balayage (black to blond hair). I wanted to lighten the ends to a platinum and touch up the grown-in black roots. This kit worked perfectly! The box doesn't say what volume the developer is so I had to be very careful. I am 99.9% sure this is a 40 volume developer. FORTY volume is very, very high. I can tell it's a very strong developer because it bleached my black hair within 10 minutes. The directions say that maximum processing time is 50 minutes, but I highly encourage not to go past 20-30 minutes if your hair is virgin healthy and not past 10-15 if your hair has previously been lightened or your naturally blond. Once I finished getting my roots, I washed it out as quickly as possible because I noticed it was already turning quickly to my desired color. I don't think anyone who wrote a bad review read the directions because it reads to do a test strand first so you can see how fast it processes on your hair and from that you can gauge how much processing time you need. You should also check on your hair frequently during processing. I know my hair so I skipped doing a test strand, but that is at my own risk. Well, bleaching hair at home is entirely at your own risk. Also, if you're doing a full head bleach, you should always apply the dye to the ends first then to the roots because the heat from your head causes the dye to process quicker near the roots. For the reviewer that said she ended up with white roots and orange ends, I'm sure she applied the opposite. And the fact that this is probably a 40 volume developer makes the process time way quicker. In her defense, none of this is not mentioned on the box, but bleaching hair can be a difficult process, so I hope this long review helps out the next person. Another thing to note- this kit includes a "toning shampoo" but it's really just a lightly pigmented purple shampoo. You will definitely still need a toner. I recommend the Wella toner and developer. I won't go into details, but please read the directions on the box. Get a few bottles because you will probably need to re-tone weekly to monthly. After bleaching and toning, I used an Olaplex treatment just to be safe. You can get it for $30 at Sephora. I have fine hair and the bottle lasts me about 4 treatments. Then, I followed with a purple shampoo and blue mask to further cancel out any leftover yellow or orange tones. Again, please follow the manufacturer's directions on these products. Despite all of these tips, if you've never bleached hair before, please just go to the salon. You'll end up paying more money to fix a botched hair color at-home than to just go to the salon.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great.. at least at first The Sally employee recommended this to me.. I used it to balayage my hair, and it worked great. The problem is that my hair has been super knotty and gross recently!! It took me like 30 minutes to brush all of the knots out of my hair, which is a problem I have never had before!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome for ombreing, but toner doesn't work I ombred my hair with this, and it brought my super dark brown hair to a nice orangey blonde in just 25 minutes or so! It's quite effective, but I'm guessing based upon the other reviews that it's pretty darn damaging if you do your roots. I washed it well with the toning shampoo, but it did nothing. I would suggest getting a high quality toner separately. Overall: Pros: Great for ombreing and is super effective Cons: Damages roots really bad if you do them (I'm guessing) and toning shampoo doesn't work. Hope that helped! PS, it doesn't say anything about the volume on the box, but it's probably 40, maybe 30.
