Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as described This isn't remotely charcoal. It's brown-based. The rinse water was brown. I'm semi-happy with the faded results. It suits my skin better than gray. But this is it. It's NOT charcoal. Not even close. It's a neutral toned dark blonde.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rose Color is cuutee I have done this twice now and I am truly in love with the color. I started with a silver toned color (reference below). It gives me the pastel pink tht I want and I’m too scared to try anything else. The first time I dyed my hair with this I think I left it on for 20-30 mins. When I touched up the color I left it on for 45 mins this time and it became a more vibrant pink (nearing magenta) and it faded again nicely to the cute pastel pink. I’ve gotten many compliments on my hair and I always hear random strangers passing by talking about how they love my hair. The downsides are the fact that it does fade overtime but it fades pretty evenly. My biggest con though is how bad it looks after swimming in chlorine (again ref photo below). It’s pretty ugly but the nice thing is this dye is cheap. The fade usually lasts me a month but I also just wash my hair pretty much once a week because I need those natural oils in my fried bleached hair lol If you wash your hair often, I do not recommend this for you. Hope this helped.

So I have recently dyed my hair smokey silver after being bleached the bleach was that yellow orange color but the color still took as a charcoal grey & used 2 boxes NOW, i just bought silver pearl & wanted to know if it would have the silver purple tint

Asked by: lilhilt0704
I bought this color for my husband and you only get the silver with purple tint if you strip your hair a little past straw yellow. If it's anything at straw yellow or darker, it won't stick.

my hair is brown but is going permanently grey and I want to make it all totally grey. What do you advise to use?

Asked by: KristiV1973
a couple of the grey colors in the Ion Color Brilliance Permanent collection, 7VA Chrome, and 6C-HM Light Charcoal. I have used them to mix with my dark ash blond hair color (a different brand) to give a more natural grey-brown tone (not the warm tones), with good, but varying results. The Chrome color (on my hair) is fairly light and silvery, while the Light Charcoal is rather dark, not "light". (There is a darker Ion Charcoal shade available, but I imagine it is really dark.) So I may try to mix the two greys I've used to try to get a medium grey color, but still blend it with an ash blond color. In your hair, do you want the grey to be darker or lighter than your original brown? I'm not a hair color expert, but I think if the grey you want is darker than the brown, you can use the grey color directly on top of the brown, and maybe the Light Charcoal color would be good to use. I do think the brown hair colored with the grey would not turn out pure grey at first, though, but you can continue to recolor with the grey and it would gradually get more grey, I assume. But if the grey you want is lighter than your brown, in order to go lighter you may have to first strip (bleach) your original hair color and then use the grey shade you want (the Chrome or Light Charcoal or a mix of the two). You may just have to experiment to see how it comes out. I was a little jittery at first with mixing colors and experimenting, but have not had any problems doing so. I was also told, if you mix hair color brands, to be sure they both use the same developer volume level. Hope this helps.

I used Ion medium gray hair color this time instead of the light charcoal gray hair color and it came out pretty dark with a hint of gray in the light.....I do love these colors but was wondering if it will lighten up some after few washes....

Asked by: Raven054
It's permanent color, but like all color it will fade with washing. Particularly if you use a shampoo that doesn't protect your color correctly. For the most fade, was often, in hot, lather well and repeat until the water runs clear. ;-)

Do I need to use a toner after I bleach my hair or does this act as a toner as well? I'm trying to go silver

Asked by: Elaina73
Would help to know which "silver" you are trying to use, would also help to know how light your hair is post bleach. You should tone it out but your hair will need to be icey blonde before applying any of the silvers from this brand. If not you will experience green/dirty blonde spots. The only color I would recommend if you lifted light enough and preferred not to tone your hair, would be Pewter. Mind you that's not silver, that's a medium Grey. Your hair MUST be white prior to applying any brands silver, if not you will end up with a green hue since generally you will experience yellowy brassy colors... Adding an ashy color to a yellow color will result in a green. Purples cancel out yellow, greens cancel out red. I highly recommend getting your hair professionally colored if you're trying to achieve silver, silver is very difficult.

When to use this product What is the results

Asked by: Pilar palmatier
I used the product to mix half and half with my regular hair color to give my hair an overall cooler color while still mostly the natural color I use. It was a subtle change but did look cooler. This seems to be a god way to overcome the brassy tones of my regular purchased hair color (although it was an ash color to begin with).

Asked by: LunaM00n
Yes! The permanent Rose is beautiful! I’ve diluted it with some clear and used it all over my level 10 hair before as well as using the color straight up for some peek-a-boo highlights also on level 10. Results were both breathtaking. The rose is one of my favorites!

Simply...color will not lift color. You’ll need to have your hair lifted appropriately. Especially when dealing with years of colouring your hair red.

how light does your hair need to be to have these colors show

Asked by: megmeg32
Ideally platinum blonde. As with most hair color products. You will still get a decent looking result starting from dark blonde, given that these colors are fairly neutral. And these can also balance out orange tints from bleaching. But to get the expected results, start from platinum. Also, the color will come out darker immediately and will fade to expected after about 4 showers.

What color would my hair more than likely turn into if I mixed Rose & Nude? A whole tube of Rose & a whole tube of Nude? Maybe Rose Gold/Strawberry Blonde

Asked by: LunaM00n
I used a pea size bit of rose in a whole tube of nude and got a very unique strawberry blonde\dusty pink color, more normal than a fashion color like pink. It would have been appropriate for even an office job. An entire tube of rose would be BRIGHT pink blondish whereas mine was strawberry blonde pinkish. Lol it's all subjective.....lol....I imagine it would be a very bright, head turning color! Especially if you use developer, I think that's why do many said it just washed right out, they used it like manic panic instead of adding the developer which makes it permanent. I want to see nude by itself, on someone's real hair, not Ions swatch. I did remove the nude rose the very next day and just toned my blonde to white with Well a T18 White Lady or pale ash blonde as it's now called.

can you mix this hair color with a bleach for highlights on dark hair? I use pull through the cap method and want something besides blonde highlights?

Asked by: Peaceful and happy
No. I would not recommend mixing hair color with hair bleach. Bleach lifts the color that is already in your hair and often times requires a different amount of time and different level of developer. Since bleach lifts color, mixing color in, would completely defete the purpose of putting color in your hair. It will not deposit the color. It is a two step process. It could be 3 depending on how dark your is and how much lift the bleach will give you. (I.e. if your hair is very pale blonde, bleach should lighten it enough to go straight to coloring. If your hair is medium blonde to black, bleaching may turn your hair dark orange/yellow. In which case you would need a toner after bleaching, but before dying.) I have experimented a ton with my hair and currently have light silver hair. Also keep in mind, if you are doing a silver color, it is a very transparent shade. So any color you have in your hair will show through the silver. Here are the steps I would recommend: Make sure your hair is unwashed so your oils protect your scalp and protect hair from unnecessary damage. 1. Bleach 2. Rinse AND WASH with shampoo, this is vital to avoid damage and messing with the next step. (I learned this the hard way) 3. Tone your hair. I use Lightest Ash Blonde by Wella. You can purchase it at Sallys. 4. If your hair is ready, as in light enough to where you want it, you can go ahead and put dye in after drying it. If your hair is not light enough to deposit the color, I would recommend waiting at least a week before bleaching again. This is when toner becomes your best friend. My hair took 6 bleaching sessions to become light enough to add silver into it. If that is the case for you, I highly recommend just waiting it out. It is well worth it. You do not want your hair to break off and have the possibility of going bald. Another thing, DO NOT for any reason EVER apply heat or a cap over the bleach while it is on your hair. This will literally melt your hair. I hope this helps. :) good luck and happy hair coloring.
