Rated 5 out of 5 by from ION Hair Color 6NN Cream Awesome color and coverage for gray hair. Smells great too!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I’m ready to cry I bought 9nn which is supposed to be a beautiful blonde. I put it on an already level 9 hair color and it turned into a medium orange brown color. This is so disappointing. I have been spending so much money to get my hair light blonde and I thought this would be the last of it but instead I’m back to square 1.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ho hum not sure yet I normally used clairol. Bought these on sale. Color is comparable by level. Not as neutral as clairol. Doesn’t mix easily and additives make it lumpy. Will need to play with it more to know if I like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best natural looking dark brown color Love this hair color. It looks the most natural 3NN no reads or purple hues..just nice dark brown color. Makes your hair feel soft. My only complaint is you really have to work it when you add developer to cream color cream beads up ..it's odd to me .other brands don't do that..but I put up with it for other benefits.

What I can use to cover the brassy color roots.  I used the dark brown on all my hair but the roots comes in brassy color.  Please help

Asked by: Angela 80
You might try applying plain peroxide on roots first for about 10-15 mins to open the shaft. Then apply as usual

Which volume developer should I use 30 or 40

Either one, both are faster working than the 20, although the higher the volume, the harsher on your hair

If I use nice and easy (golden blond) what shade would icon match?

Asked by: Patricia Kinsman
In Nice and Easy my color was lightest golden brown and with the ion medium intense blonde is a shade darker, so definitely plan on buying a lighter color of the ion.

I usually use 20 volume developer but I would like my hair to come out lighter. Should I use 40 volume developer so the color comes out lighter but still covers my gray? I am 100% gray and do the regrowth for 45 minutes. Thank you

Asked by: Sandra Jane
Do not use 40 volume developer on regular dye jobs, it damages the hair more. (All dye damages the hair, use the least strong developer you can to minimize the damage.) 20 volume is the correct strength for normal dyeing & I've found 45 minutes works best for my gray too, but if you want to change the color you've already applied to a lighter color than the dye you have already used, then you can up the volume the next time to strip some of the color out while using a lighter shade, just remember it damages the hair more because it opens up the cuticle in the hair shaft wider, and once damaged it will be weaker & need more conditioning. You could also switch brands to one that also lifts as well as deposits color unlike Ion which doesn't lift at all. I don't think the moderators on here will let me recommend a different brand, they have removed two of my posts where I specifically mentioned the brand I used to use and compared it to Ion, sorry.

how often can I use this on my hair?

Asked by: CRAZY COLOR
I don't put color on top of color, unless something happened to the original color to make it go bad. The old color fades sometimes, or turns brassy, then you can try a red-gold corrector in your dye and go over it to tone down the brassiness. I only put new color on the roots usually, to cover the new gray. I sometimes put leftover color in streaks down the top of the rest of my hair just to use it all up instead of wasting it if I mixed too much. Ion does not lift, it only lays down new color, so even if you put on a lighter shade, like blond over brown, it won't turn blond by doing this with Ion. The less you color the better, color ALWAYS damages your hair. I always condition after coloring too, and I always shampoo all the color out of my hair BEFORE I condition it.

What would 7NN - 7.00 look like over bleached blond balayage. I just need to tone down all that light blonde and some red I wandered what this color put on it would do.

Asked by: Donabarrett
There is an additive called "Ardell Red Gold Corrector Plus" that you can add to any type of dye to remove the red/gold brassy effect.

What difference between intense blonde and blonde

Asked by: PatriceK
I'm told it means Intense blond has more pigment, it lays down more of the color.

My hair is really black and i have too much white hair. I am using deep to med brown but my gray hair becomes light brown and its seems i have 2tone hair. The gray hair is stubborn and its still gray coloring. What dye # will i used for ion brand?

Asked by: Hillary ann
Ion makes a separate gray coverage dye, it's better to cover the gray, but I also add some Gray Magic additive just to the roots, it makes the color stronger and the gray doesn't show thru as much. White hair is much harder to cover than colored hair. You can also try the "intense" series, they lay down more pigment. (One thought; sometimes you can use the "2tone hair" effect to advantage, if you can figure out just exactly what new color you want the white hair to look like. I saw one beautiful black-haired woman whose hair was going gray all over but she covered everything except one lock of hair at the left of center and left that one lock white, it gave her a great effect).

I had bleached ombre and I will use a protein and this dark intense brown dye. My question is will this dye fade and if so, how much? Will it fade into weird gray colors? Will it last at least 8 months because it does say it is permanent.

Asked by: stardreaming86
Dye always fades, even permanent dye. Some fade more than others. (The only exception to this I've found is the water-based vegetable dyes, they don't fade even if you try to lighten them.) I've found all ash-labeled chemical dyes turn brassy eventually, even though they're blue-based. I bought an additive called "Ardell Red Gold Protector Plus" that you add to any dye to remove the brassiness, it seems to help.

I used 8NN Lightest Intense Blonde and I am horrified that my once medium blonde hair is brown. I always used Loreal medium Blonde 8 and Clairol Root Touchup Medium or light blonde. Swatch in store matched my hair it sure doesn't now, what happened?

Asked by: Riverbuny
Ion colors are darker than other dyes, it says so in the book the Sally Beauty shop had for Ion. All their shades are about one shade darker in the same color numbers when compared to other dyes. I don't usually do a color test, but it is a good idea when switching dyes.

How do you use the product I already bought it but I don't know if I mix it or just put it on straight dry hair or wet hair

Asked by: Jackie5150
I have had hair color put on both dry and wet hair by different beauticians, they say it doesn't matter (I've asked). I always put mine on my dry hair at home. One beautician insisted on washing my hair first, others didn't. Moral of this story: it may not matter wet or dry.

What are the side effects to ion hair color

Asked by: Hernandez22
The only "side effects" I've had is my scalp stinging if I have a scratch. It will dye your skin too if you leave it on. I don't advise putting dye on the skin, skin absorbs everything, you don't want chemicals absorbed into your body. It's really hard to do your own hair without getting it on your scalp.

Hi the 4nn left my gray roots a bit more of a reddish tint with still a little gray noticeable. I used the Salon care 20vol developer and left it on for 45 minutes. Is there another color you would suggest?

Asked by: Tonya gal
There is Ardell Red/Gold Corrector Plus additive you can use to remove red/yellow in any dye; just measure the drops into the dye as you mix it up. (They also make a Gray Magic additive that makes dye color resistant gray hair better.)

I mistakenly purchased the 5NN-5.0 hair color instead of my regular 5N-5.00. and, now I see that the 5NN is for "intense" brown. Can you tell me the difference between the two? thank you.

Asked by: Jude5655
You will get a richer, darker color with the Intense color. I would say it's as dark (or darker) as the next color up. I think it covers gray hair very well, but it is very intense in color.

For all over color that has been previously colored with the same shade ~30 minutes. For root touch up the same but hard to cover gray might need an additional 5-10 minutes for best thorough gray coverage.

How many boxes would I need for extremely long, thick hair down to my waist. I'd appreciate any help this is my first time ever coloring.

Asked by: gypsy1970
My own hair is shoulder length and I use half a color tube plus equal parts ion developer for root touch up. For first time overall color on thick very long hair you should purchase two tubes, mixing one at a time then mix the second tube once you've used up the first mixture.  There are very helpful videos to demonstrate color application. A few inexpensive accessories like a color brush, rat tail comb, bowl, and cotton will help you achieve this easier. Have fun!!  You'll love Ion color. It's awesome.

how do i put this on my hair without frying it???

Asked by: JDavis12
This formula is not harsh, despite the "intense" in the name.  The intense refers to the color's ability to adhere more effectively to gray hair.  If you are concerned about "frying" your hair, use a developer for sensitive scalp and condition immediately after coloring with an intensive hair mask.  Umberto makes a very good one that is reasonably priced.

I have very thick, collarbone length hair and I use 2 boxes. If you're buying the creme dye, mix with a liquid developer and if you're buying the liquid dye, mix with a creme developer.
