If you have never colored your hair and you want to change your current hair color or you have not colored in 3 months or longer follow these steps:

    • Apply hair color mixture to dry, unwashed hair
    • Work gently through hair as you would a shampoo. Loosely pile hair on top of head
    • Process according to manufacturer’s directions. When processing time is complete, add a small amount of warm water to hair and work into lather
    • Rinse until the water runs clear.

If you color your hair every 4-6 weeks with a shade of similar tone and level follow these steps:

    • Make 1/4” partings throughout dry, unwashed hair
    • Apply mixture onto new growth area only, working from the front to the back of your head. Leave color on new growth area for 25 minutes. When processing time is complete, add a small amount of warm water to hair and work into lather
    •  Rinse until the water runs clear.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Livid I bought this like two weeks ago and just used it monday. It hasnt even been a week and the color is coming out and fading, this is supposed to be permanent and doesnt even work. I bleached the under part of my hair all the way to the ends, and it dyed my roots but not my tips so i literally had strawberry blonde tips and bright red roots. Not to mention it bought the color Garnet and it was supposed to be a purpley red but it was bright red. My friend also bought the semi permanent and it lasted longer then the permanent.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lavendar Hair Color I bought this a few days ago and bleached my hair. And I dyed it with the lavender hair color but it didn’t changed my hair color with no results. I do not recommend this hair color for its price.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't stand out I have naturally dark brown hair and used the tananzite which I thought would give me a hint of blueish purple. I left it on for 40 minutes and used 20 developer. My hair went from dark brown to black with barely any color hint!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just giving advice I used to work at Sallys and I'm licensed. I was browsing thru the comments because I wanted to see how fast this faded for people and I've read a lot of misunderstandings of the directions. Developer HAS to be used with this, or it won't work. There's a semi-permanent version with very similar packaging and that doesn't use developer. It is designed to be used with 10 volume because it has more deposit than 20 and 20 makes your hair more porous so the color will fade much faster. Also if the sapphire is used, your hair has to be pre-lightened to very light blonde and toned or else the yellow/orange in the hair will cause you hair to look green after a couple washes. For the other shades, it won't lighten hair to the hair must be at least the same level as the shade used. Porosity filler will help it not to fade as fast. If you used box color from the drug store, always do a test strand because you might have metallic dyes in your hair and the color can react and cause it to become very brittle. That is all, thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Color I dyed my hair with the radiant orchid shade and I love it! The color is so intense and turned out beautifully! It runs a little when you wash it. That’s to be expected, but after a month of washing every 2nd day I don’t see a difference in the color from the day I dyed it. Will 100% be buying this from now on when it’s due for a touch up.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointed I went to our local beauty supply store and bought 3 boxes of this, 2 in magenta and 1 in the red. I did a strand test on my daughter's hair with the magenta and it looked amazing! Then I put it on the rest of her hair and nothing happened at all. I used it directly from the tube both times. Also my other daughter that was using the red color now has blotches of red in her hair. So it worked, in spots. I do not understand why this would happen. The only thing I can think is that the strand test I did was on her normal hair, the rest I did on pre lightened hair. Would this make a difference? I have been dying hair for years, and I was so excited to see the shade of pink/ purple it made her one strand. Then nothing. She was very sad. I would not buy this again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Burnt wire smell The dye smelled like burnt wires after application. The dye had zero effect. Now, after almost a dozen washes in two days, my hair still smells like burning wires. It's unfortunate, because I've used other varieties of ion color with no problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite all time hair color! I absolutely love this hair color! I just wish they made the same sapphire blue in this permanent version like they have in the semi permanent version. The tanzanite is beautiful, just a little bit too dark for what I want. The orchid turned out amazingly and lasted so long.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sapphire turned green :( 2nd time I've used this and I'm soo disappointed. 1st time did it on unbleached jet black hair (jet black from a previous dye job gone wrong.) Made it shiny but that's it. No blue to be found. 2nd time I bleached my hair to a honey light brown color, then applied the sapphire. :( my roots were not bleached but had faded to a light brown since the jet black. I applied the sapphire color all over. I followed the directions and even used the color sealer stuff. Once dried, my ends that were a brown color with a greenish tint. And my roots were once again jet black. Seams like the color went right down the drain. Now I have to wait till it fades. But im scared because I think it will fade into a green color like my ends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous color I love this hair color. The tanzanite is gorgeous and fades gently to silver in my hair (med brunette). As I color over the top the pigment builds and has various depths of color. The price is great too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not as Bright and Vivid as the sample and fades I bought the Permanent Magenta because I wanted my color to last and I thought the color would work better then their semi-permanent dyes. I followed the instructions, my hair was bleached super light and the color did not grab the way the store sample looks (hot pink) The color was a raspberry tone and after 2 washes my hair is now a orange pink tone (I have named my new color; vomit pink). I’ve used Ion’s Aqua and Sapphire Semi-Permanent Dyes and they last waaaay longer. Yes blue grabs better and is a hassle to take off but that is the reason why I chose the permanent route.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So disappointed Well me and my friend both bought this in several different colors to try it out and let me tell you when this stuff literally dyed everything but our hair. With bleached hair and already light hair. This looks like we put koolaid in our hair or it’s been in there for 3 years and we never upkept it. This is by far the worst product I’ve used by them and I tend to like their products. This was horrendous. We repainted our bathroom instead with this and this happened AS WE WERE WASHING IT OUT. Idk what happened I’ve dyed my own hair fun colors before and never has this EEEVVVER happened.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Intense color I bought this product 3 different ones (sky blue, aqua, orchid) my goal was electric blue. It worked out amazing!!! with the remaining orchid I did electric blue to purple ombre on curly hair. I left it in for an hour.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful color! I've been dying my hair with radiant orchid for over a year now. It's my absolute favorite color! It is more magenta than purple which was not at all what I expected but I just love it! It lasts for months! And the color is SO different in different kinds of light!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not have color I recently bought the Azure blue, in IONs semi permanent hair dye. Loved it, needed to fix some spots I missed I was going to buy more when I seen that they had the same color in permanent! I was so happy, I love the color and want it to last. I ordered the permanent Azure hair color and to my surprise the cream was white and not blue. I put it in my hair and after 15 minutes it was still white, thinking it needed longer to develop I waited 10 mor minutes and it did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. This is literally just a white cream that has no pigment and does nothing. Very dissatisfied, going to get the semi permanent Azure again because at least actually colors your hair.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Are used flamingo on my daughters hair. I did bleached highlights on the top and bleached the underneath. I did not tell Nate and left it brassy because I wanted a salmon color. She is already a natural dirty blonde. I only left the color on for about 15 minutes because the original brightness kind of scared me. When I washed it out it turned out amazing. It was the exact salmon color I was looking for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great color I have been dying my hair red for decades and wanted a unique change. I let my now gray roots grow out to about 1 1/2". I then applied purple to the roots and underside of my hair. WOW, what a great effect! I love it. will use again.

what cream developer is best 10 or 20?

Asked by: Kblair1944
10 is best for pre-bleached hair to avoid damage, 20 is more powerful and works well on light, in bleached hair. I use 10 on my ends and 20 on my roots and I have dark brown hair and am looking for a dark deep tone

Is this all I need to color my hair

Asked by: Rebecca86
I've use both and love the permanent colors. U will need a developer. I would probably use a 20 and keep a close eye and maybe leave a little longer. The 30-40 will lighten ur original color faster and lighter so keep vigilant and maybe not leave on as long but it does depend on ur current color. Look at developer this way: the higher it is the lighter ur original color will be and that can also affect the lightness of the dye too.

What volume developer would I need for the sapphire my hair is a Medium brown natural level 4 or 5 and I want to get a deep sapphire color almost blue black but more blue so was curious what level of developer would I need?

Asked by: Mary2626
See if there is a blue color addition. I dye mine red and use a red addition to really make it red. Depends on how much u use. Also, if it's the same brand u can mix the colors together, blue dye and black, maybe even use a littler more blue than the black. I mix magenta and red.

How easy is this to apply? And does it hold well on gray hair?

Asked by: Janet217
U want to do the purple in the pic? Check the color and it'll say if it colors Gray's well. May have to use the permanent and since it's already light, go with 30-40vol. Just continually check and make sure it's the color u want. May turn quicker using a high vol on grey hair. Good luck! You can also call ION and they'll help u.

I've been using the semi-permanent lavender for a long time. I'd love to use the permanent lavender. Do I have to strip out the semi-permanent to use this & then bleach my hair (I'm naturally med blonde). What level developer is best?

Asked by: Susan21014
If you've been using the semi and it works great, the move to permanent should be easy without removing the color in it.I would start with 10 or 20vol. 20 may lighten it but I'm not sure. I dye mine the same color and either use a10vol and let it set longer, constantly checking, or if I use a 20 or 30 vol, I CONSTANTLY check and maybe not leave it in there as long as directed so it doesn't lighten it.

I bought the Magenta Permanent Brights, and the associate said I needed the 20 creme developer. I applied it to my already very lightened hair. It did not dye my hair magenta at all, but it did lighten the hair that wasn't already bleached. What happened?

Asked by: SoniWild
I use the red and magenta perma lights. My hair has already been dyed a million times and normally I use 10 developer and just leave it on for awhile. If I use 20 vol or higher, I make sure to continually check and sometimes not even leave on as long as supposed to because it will lighten my hair also. If u really want to go magenta, I suggest L'Oreal Hi-Lights for dark hair in magenta. My fav is to mix the red and the magenta. TBH, u may have to go to a salon first to get what u want and then just up keep from there. They can figure out exactly what u need but personally I think ur developer was too strong and the dye was the wrong kind for ur hair.I used to have Platinum hair that had trouble taking color. GOOD LUCK!

What developer should I use to make this color pop

Asked by: Cassandra0214
Depends on the color of your hair now! I use 30 and I have dark brown hair. If your hair is dark, I suggest using 40 developer

I have covered my hair great but I need highlights or a platinum color instead. What do I use to get this lighter?

Asked by: Kimlehart
If you mean how do you apply it as a lighter color use a diluter of another brand or a "clear" direct dye there are several available on this site. If you mean it's too dark and you want to lighten it use bleach to lift to the desired shade first then mix with a diluter and reapply to desired shade.
