Processing times for root touch ups:

25-45 minutes based on the texture and porosity of your hair.

Average hair (35-40 minutes)

Coarse or resistant gray hair (40-45 minutes)

Refreshing the mid-lengths to ends (5-15 minutes)

Tips and Tricks

Crème hair color is best mixed in a tint bowl and applied with an a tint brush. A root to tip color application is not recommended. Always test strand first to ensure desired results!

For superior gray coverage a 20 volume developer is recommended.

If you touch up your roots every 4-6 weeks and would like to change colors you would still only retouch the roots and refresh the ends later in the processing time.

Remember, tint does not lift tint! When wanting to go lighter in shade selection you must remove the previous color first in order to go lighter! If wanting to stay the same shade level or going darker, color removal is not necessary in most scenarios.

1:1 mixing ratio. Two ounces of color to two ounces of 10, 20, 30 or 40 Volume ion Sensitive Scalp Creme Developer. High Lift Blonde series is mixed 1:2 ratio: Two ounces of color to 4 ounces of 30 or 40 Volume Ion Sensitive Scalp Developer. Bowl and brush application is recommended. Always read the product packaging and inserts for complete directions, instructions, and warnings, and make sure to perform both the strand test and the patch test before applying your color.

If have never colored your hair and you want to change your current hair color or you have not colored in 3 months or longer follow these steps:

Apply hair color mixture to dry, unwashed hair

• Work gently through hair as you would a shampoo. Loosely pile hair on top of head

• Process according to manufacturer’s directions. When processing time is complete, add a small amount of warm water to hair and work into lather

• Rinse until the water runs clear.

If you color your hair every 4-6 weeks with a shade of similar tone and level follow these steps:

Make 1/4” partings throughout dry, unwashed hair

• Apply mixture onto new growth area only, working from the front to the back of your head. Leave color on new growth area for 25 minutes. When processing time is complete, add a small amount of warm water to hair and work into lather

• Rinse until the water runs clear.

Other tips: Always perform a strand and patch test

• It is often not necessary to refresh the ends of the hair on every permanent hair color touch-up application

• For resistant gray, use 20 Volume ion Sensitive Scalp® Creme Developer and apply to gray area first

• Apply a stain barrier cream around the hairline prior to application when using dark shades

• Choose a lighter shade than desired if you are unsure of which shade to use or if you have very few gray hairs

• Use an old towel to protect your clothing

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works great, but beware of gluten! Never thought to check my hair dye ingredients for gluten, but after being sick for several days without any obvious cause, it dawned on me that I started feeling sick hours after coloring my hair with ion hair dye! This dye really does a great job, but if you are celiac/have gluten sensitivities it may be best to go for something else. I'm so sad I won't be able to use ion color anymore. :(

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Kinda worked? After I washed it out after putting it in after 72 hours, my hair color kinda faded. I have brown roots and blonde tips, and the the color on the roots stayed but on my bleached tips, it faded. I really liked the Garnet color, but it soon faded to a light purple, which was disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sally's has your beauty back up plan during COVID I use this to color my mom's hair about every 2 to 3 months. I started doing my mom's hair for her during the first lockdown due to covid. Sally's has been so helpful with questions about products. And if they don't have a specific product in stock chances are they have an alternative product to try. I have been impressed with Sally's this past year because they have a beauty back up plan in case your attempt doesn't go as planned. After the first lockdown Sally's has really listened to what their customers need and is kicking butt at keeping items stocked and still at great prices. xoxo

I have used the 8A light ash blonde on my hair recently, my natural color is a dark ash blonde and the results have more red tones with a strawberry blonde tint which I didn't want, how do I fix this to achieve the light ash blonde that I want?

Asked by: Jelly941
I was told by my stylist to avoid colors with Ash in them because what you describe happens. I ended up with strawberry blonde for a bit because I tried to go honey blonde. I’m on attempt number two with a different color. Crossing fingers and toes that this one will work as desired.

my hair is dark brown with a reddish tone I want to change my color to a light chocolate color.  How can I get my hair color at least two or three shades lighter than my natural color?

Asked by: Eterre11
I am not a professional but, my natural color is dark brown with auburn highlights. When I want to go lighter, I use a lightener a day or two ahead of color. Basically it strips my hair of some previous color and prepares it for the next. I do it on a weekend so I don't have to go anywhere for the day because the lightener makes my hair a funky orange until I dye it. As I said, I'm not a professional. I'm just trying to help. Sorry I couldn't give any better suggestions. Good luck!

What is the undertone of the Dark Charcoal Gray? I'm trying to do a shadow root on my white hair, and I know 1N will likely pull green. Was thinking about mixing in a little red with the 1N to cancel out the green, but hoping I can just do 1C instead.

I used Dark & Lovely Crimson Moon 4 weeks ago. The color did not come out as it said it would. My hair is a light orange brown and my ends are dark brown. I need to color my hair and fix this problem. I would like to use the Ion Permanent Color 31R.

Asked by: Teejae 3
Yes, you can cover over with 3IR if you prefer that tone instead. Just be sure to test strand to ensure desired results!

My natural color is around a level 6. I colored my roots with a 6n and 20 developer for 40 min but they turned out super brassy. So I tried the 5n and it’s still super brassy just darker. What should I do?

Asked by: Xanna2020
Maybe try Wella T18 toner.

My hair color is medium brown red with some grey hair on the roots I want to change my hair color silver.  Which product should I buy.

Asked by: Fritz2020
I am going through this process right now! You need to see a professional don't do this yourself. Red is the most difficult to transition to another lighter color.
