  • Mixing Ratio:

1:2 (1 ounce of color to two ounces of developer) High Lift shades (HL-N/V/G/B)

1:1 (1 ounce of color to one ounce of developer)

Processing times for root touch ups:

25-45 minutes based on the texture and porosity of your hair.

    Fine hair (25-30 minutes)

    Average hair (35-40 minutes)

Coarse or resistant gray hair (40-45 minutes)

Refreshing the mid-lengths to ends (5-15 minutes)

    Tips and Tricks

Crème hair color is best mixed in a tint bowl and applied with an a tint brush. A root to tip color application is not recommended. Always test strand first to ensure desired results!

For superior gray coverage a 20 volume developer is recommended.

If you touch up your roots every 4-6 weeks and would like to change colors you would still only retouch the roots and refresh the ends later in the processing time.

Remember, tint does not lift tint! When wanting to go lighter in shade selection you must remove the previous color first in order to go lighter! If wanting to stay the same shade level or going darker, color removal is not necessary in most scenarios.

  • 1:1 mixing ratio. Two ounces of color to two ounces of 10, 20, 30 or 40 Volume ion Sensitive Scalp Creme Developer. High Lift Blonde series is mixed 1:2 ratio: Two ounces of color to 4 ounces of 30 or 40 Volume Ion Sensitive Scalp Developer. Bowl and brush application is recommended. Always read the product packaging and inserts for complete directions, instructions, and warnings, and make sure to perform both the strand test and the patch test before applying your color.

If have never colored your hair and you want to change your current hair color or you have not colored in 3 months or longer follow these steps:

Apply hair color mixture to dry, unwashed hair

    • Work gently through hair as you would a shampoo. Loosely pile hair on top of head

    • Process according to manufacturer’s directions. When processing time is complete, add a small amount of warm water to hair and work into lather

    • Rinse until the water runs clear.

If you color your hair every 4-6 weeks with a shade of similar tone and level follow these steps:

Make 1/4” partings throughout dry, unwashed hair

    • Apply mixture onto new growth area only, working from the front to the back of your head. Leave color on new growth area for 25 minutes. When processing time is complete, add a small amount of warm water to hair and work into lather

    • Rinse until the water runs clear.

Other tips: Always perform a strand and patch test

    • It is often not necessary to refresh the ends of the hair on every permanent hair color touch-up application

    • For resistant gray, use 20 Volume ion Sensitive Scalp® Creme Developer and apply to gray area first

    • Apply a stain barrier cream around the hairline prior to application when using dark shades

    • Choose a lighter shade than desired if you are unsure of which shade to use or if you have very few gray hairs

    • Use an old towel to protect your clothing

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No toner. Just color. Didn’t read details. I bought wrong item. The color was perfectly fine but I did not read the details and I thought I can get the whole package with toner and everything else like you do with most packages and it was just the color bottle. I thought I was getting a good deal for four dollars but I didn’t see that it was just the color oh well...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Always a good choice. Doesn't dry out hair like box dyes do. I love the color selections. My only complaint is that the instructions for what level developers and how much you need is on the INSIDE of the box and not outside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love the intensity of this color! I've been using Ion color for many years.. I used to be a blond, but decided about 10 years ago to go to a burgundy brown.. I mix in a little of the hot red intensifier and it really makes the color beautiful and almost looks like hi-lights in my hair.. I highly recommend if you're looking for a change to bring out your eyes and skin tone..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this dye I bought this and used it today in the shape 7IR with a 10 volume developer and wow. My hair feels and looks great! I’ve been using box dye to dye my hair for the last 6 years, and I am NEVER using box dye again. My hair was a very faded red/orange color and this made my hair super even and it feels really healthy. I will continue using this when dying my hair! Love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great color and coverage! I loved working with this product and hair color. This was only the second time I have done my own root touch-up and this product made it easy to use with great results! With the pandemic going on, I waited 5 months before coloring my hair so you can imagine the growth on my roots! I was very nervous to see the results after rinsing and washing my hair, but was very pleasantly surprised! The color was perfect and my hair looked and felt very healthy. I will definitely do this again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressed I usually bleach then tone my hair, because it’s shaved and I do it very often it can be daunting. I thought I’d give a high lift blonde a shot, I chose HL-V Cool Blonde. I mixed with double 40 using the ion sensitive developer for 30 minutes. My natural color is a level 6 with some gray. NO yellow, and I didn’t need to tone afterwards! Now if I had more root growth I would probably leave it on for 10 minutes longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best At Home Color I loved this product. I tried it for the first time cause I couldn’t get to my hairdresser. The color was so rich and beautiful. It covered my grey without any extra product and has stayed without fading. Thank you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Coverage My hair turned prematurely white in my 20's. I've spent alot of time and money covering the roots up. Ion has consistent coverage and is easy to use. I've got light brown hair and have had to use 6N, dark blonde. The light brown color came out darker than I wanted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I like creme and liquid. I have tried both. I do prefer the liquid at times. mixes well together with the developer. Creme I think takes a bit longer to mix. once mixed the color is the same. Creme is a bit thicker and when applied than liquid. Like I said before I have scalp Psoriasis and ION hair colors are so much better than store bought hair colors. It doesn't burn my scalp. That's the main thing in coloring my hair that it doesn't burn my scalp and doesn't smell bad.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HORRIBLE. LEARNED MY LESSON I've bought this product a few years back. Washed out the first time rinsing it. Decided to give it another go. Bought everything I needed. Did extra research. Bleached my hair almost snow white. Put the toner in. Washed out. Went back to the store and bought the creme coloring. Washed out. Learned my lesson and will never buy again. And now I'm stuck with a mess of hair for a week. Thanks ion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great PPD Haircolor I seriously considered not dying my hair anymore because I had a horrible allergy to PPD. So happy this doesn’t cause the itching and hair loss PPD color did. It also covers my gray well. Try it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect color and application Love this product. Color was exactly what I was going for and it was super simple to apply and no mess application because it is a creme base.

It will look a medium brown (think Anne Hathaway). If you aren't sure, go with the lighter shade.

Hi I have naturally black hair and I want to permanently dye it light brown. Would I have to bleach my hair first and then apply the color or would I be able to just apply the color on my black hair? Thank you

Asked by: siddhi16
You would def have to bleach your hair first if you want your hair to look light brown. Adding color to black hair will just give your hair some undertones.

what will this come out like over once bleached twice toned medium blonde hair?

Hi! I was wondering if the medium ash blonde color would be able to cover my current hair. I have bleached my hair and the ends are a pale yellow, while the top half is more of a pale orange-yellow for reference. Also would a 10 vol developer work?

Asked by: trose933
Your starting color may be light enough to use 10 volume developer but the orange and yellow in your hair may affect the overall result and can cause unevenness with the application. Do a patch test first on a small section of your hair to see how the color will turn out before doing a whole head application. Hello, i used ion brilliance Permanent Creme Hair Color on my roots in "Medium Copper" to match the rest of my hair and it blended well but slightly darker. Can i reeaply same color to my roots to make slight lighter?

Asked by: Anonymous
Simply, color doesnt lift color. Your best bet is to focus shampoo on the roots and do a deep conditioner every once in a while to keep your hair healthy. That being said, if you would like to make the rest of your hair match your roots, you could totally dye it again. Good luck on your hair adventures!!

Can you mix hi lift ash blonde and silver together to get a light silver/gray

Asked by: Lisacav89
You can mix hair colors together but the results will vary based on your current hair color and how the colors mix. You might want to perform a swatch test first to see how this will turn out.
