Rated 1 out of 5 by from Gray did not cover! Extremely frustrated I left the color on more than 25 minutes trying to get it to cover and it did not. When I rinsed it out I still had gray roots. I have colored my hair for ten years and have never had an issue. My old brand was out of stock so I thought I would try yours. Extremely frustrated because I will have to wait another six weeks to recolor it and my roots will be twice as long and gray!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So disappointed! This is my first time using L’Oreal Excellence. A close friend recommended it. I wanted to dye my grays to match the tips of my medium brown hair. It turned my hair black. I wanted to cry. Afterwards I read many reviews where even blondes said it turned their hair black. How can there be such a big discrepancy between the color on the box and the actual product? What are you doing to stop this from happening anymore? Some of the reviews are a few years old so I’m sure you are aware of this problem. You can’t just keep apologizing afterwards. FIX the PROBLEM.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What happened-- did you change the forumla I have been using the same color (Dark Ash Brown) for years and ONLY this color. This last time I colored my hair, it turned my hair a very brassy red. It looked awful. I washed it the next day and unfortunately it stayed that way for a few weeks. I didn't want to color over top of it fearing that it would mess up my hair.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from What happened!!?? I've been using a combination of Light Brown and Dark Blonde to blend my grays for YEARS. The last two times I've touched up (with the NEW plastic color tube), the color has been completely different. I now have WAY more gold than I ever want in my hair. It looks awful, when before I would have a neutral, lightish brown color. Really not pleased and will not be buying this again. :-(

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Product delivers as promised I have been using L'oreal Excellence for over 15 years. As I aged, I adjusted my shade. I was naturally Auburn (originally a 7C). As Shade changes occurred and I got older,, I began to blend 7R and 6RB to tone down the red which is brassy on older gals (and looks less than natural). At age 60, I started blending 6RB and 8RB for a very flattering and natural color (I still have the creamy ivory Irish skin and avoid sun so this color still works). This product delivers: It covers gray. It gives a healthy shine. The conditioner included really does moisturize the colored hair when done. The tube of cream for ends (use 1st) spreads easily in palms to protect those ends. The only comment I can say to those who have complained about this product is maybe they didn't follow instructions when it comes to using the product repeatedly; you do roots first, time it, then comb or blend out thru the ends. Your ends are your oldest hair and will be dry, of course! It scrubs out cleanly when done. Don't forget to leave the moisturizer (tube 3) on for a few minutes to soak in; peroxide opens the follicles of your hair and the moisturizer needs to get in there to coat & protect (as per the instructions). Great product! Good luck - get a friend to help if you are nervous.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from what happened ?! I have used and recommended Loreal Hair Color for so many years and couldn't have been more pleased. What happened Loreal?? I colored my hair yesterday and can already see that it isn't as deep-colored as all of the previous years. The last 2 colorings were the same, with hints of gray already showing through. Way too many reviews are reporting the same thing. So disappointing considering what a great product it's always been. Also, the pre-color tube is now so tiny, why bother?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Extremely drying I have used a variety of brands of hair color over the years, and I have even used L’Oreal Feria which is pretty good. But the L’Oreal Excellence line makes your hair feel like STRAW! I colored my hair 4 days ago and everyday I hope that it will get better...and it hasn’t. My hair is so dry and grimy, it feels like there’s a weird film on it. I can’t even run my fingers through my hair and styling is painfully unpleasant. This is the second time I’ve given L’Oreal Excellence a chance and I will NOT be doing it again. My hair has never felt worse.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Red Penney 7R. Lovely natural red I have been using the Red Penney 7R shade for years now and is the most beautiful natural red color I have found! I have had my hair colored red at the salon (which is expensive) and Red Penney is prettier and more natural looking. Its not brown or too orange like most red hair colors. Everyone thinks its my natural hair color (had strawberry blond as a kid but it turned brown). For some reason its harder to find and not sold in as many stores though. PLEASE don't discontinue this color, its beautiful. I was extremely disappointed with 6R Light Auburn because it came out too brown and nothing like the picture on box. Reddish Blonde 8RB is also a lovely color.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from What happened to the conditioner? I've used this product forever. However, the last time used, the conditioner smelled like ammonia; so much so that I couldn't leave it in my hair. Never experienced this before. It stinks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful light blonde color I tried this shade for the first time to color my roots blonde at home. Normally I go to my hairstylist but lately she has been doing my roots a bit darker than my overall light blonde hair which i don't like. Also, I wanted to try at home coloring for times when I can't go to a professional stylist like on holidays, and to save from regular salon coloring. I followed the directions exactly as on the box of L'Oreal Excellence Creme 9.5NB for coloring just roots for 30 mins. I didn't apply the color all over my hair the last 10 mins since was afraid not to change my blonde color. My natural hair is mahogany brown with some gray. The color came out beautiful, just like I want light blonde. Only, after massaging the color during washing it seemed that more hair fell out. I have long hair and know that normally about 100 hairs fall out a day but this seemed a bit more. Hopefully I was wrong. I was trying to find out of this color contains bleach. After blow drying, the color is beautiful, my hair is not falling out and I got compliments on the color. It also smells very nice and I love the conditioner. I only gave the product 4 stars because my air seemed to fall out a little but hopefully it just seemed so.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well enough Before I started going grey at 16 (runs in the family), I had chocolate brown hair. This worked well to keep the greys hidden. 32 years later, my hair is mostly white/grey, little brown left. I've been dying it a lighter color to decrease the contrast between the roots and colored parts. Natural light brown makes me look washed out/dead, due to all the grey, light reddish brown ends up being a brassy light auburn (red hair also runs in the family). If I mix the two 1/2 and 1/2, I get the result I want - a light, warm brown color. Excellence seems to last the longest w/o the grey peeking through after several washes, perhaps one day I'll just go full-white, but not today!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst ever hair color Just bought this yesterday and colored my hair tonight with it. Did everything i was supposed to step by step knowing this was my first time with this color/brand. My roots are the only thing that after a half hour was different and ends and shafts stayed the same. I was trying to go from a balayge red/black to a reddish blonde, hoping to get my naturalish color which is a brown.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellence Cremed is exellent! I get Medium Brown (#5) It never turns brassy like other brands and brown colors. I have medium to dark brown hair color. This is the perfect color and it covers my gray.. Don't ever get rid of this color!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good color, but the conditioner smells TERRIBLE I have enjoyed L’Oreal color products, but the most recent purchase of Excellence Creme has me reeling. The conditioner is usually the best part of the color process. I use two boxes and I save the 2nd conditioner for later. I assumed the odor on color day was from the color itself, but the later follow up conditioning revealed it was the conditioner with the abhorrent odor. Please consider changing the scent, it’s so offensive a friend who uses the same product mentioned it to me also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 4A is what you need to cover red hair! In my local rite aid at least, only Excellence makes a DARK *ash* brown (4A). I had pure crayola crayon clown primary colored red hair another brand gifted me with. Thanks other brand. NOT. It TOTALLY clashed with my warm hued fall wardrobe. So I needed the green undertones that only a dark ash brown would possess. The cream was so superior to a liquid!!!! It mixed totally easily in the bottle, and once on my head didn’t drip ONCE. I have a pixie cut so I had some left, but I’d get 2 for long hair because it wasn’t THAT much. I’m adding a photo of my hair before. It was CLOWN RED. The photo with the scarf is now my NATURAL LOOKING CHOCOLATE BROWN hair. My theory was right - this totally worked!! I don’t know how people are getting “near black” hair from this shade 4A dark ash brown. It is definitely brown, not black as you can see in the picture with the scarf. Maybe if you’re putting on bleach blonde hair or something..??. Well I’m very happy to have my natural color back :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First time at home coloring! So happy! I have been getting my hair professionally colored for over 25 years. I am mostly grey now so coloring my hair is really important to me. A friend recommended L’Oréal to me and said “just try it”, that’s what she uses. I bought a box of Light Natural Blonde #9 and I will admit, I was so nervous!! I followed the directions to a T and I am so happy with the final results! My hair is super soft and shiny. Very pleasantly surprised and I’m pretty sure that I will only be going for hair cuts now and using L’Oréal for my color.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What Happened?!!!! I have been using this for at least 8years. In the last 6 months or more this product has stopped being permanent! I have always been complemented at salons for my color. I had to convince the stylists that I always colored it myself. They even called over other stylist to look and ask me questions so clients that were limited financially would have options! Now it washes out in a week! I give up. I’m going to have to use salon services for color because it will be less than the time and effort to use this every week on my roots! This makes me so sad because I really did love this product. I use neutral medium brown level 5. I use the pink box. The gold box did this when I tried it so I never used it again.

I used liquid Excellence #9 Pastel blonde...  what is equivalent?  Would #9 Blonde be the same thing in Excellence the cream?  You no longer carry the liquid form of Excellence

Asked by: Lynieepooh58
Never used the liquid color but would assume that #9 and 9 Blonde would be very close is color.

Why is the sample of L’Oréal Excellence hair color #9 light blonde look like dark brown?

Asked by: Beau8979
If you are describing the color of the product, its always darker in tube than final hair color with only exception being you leave the color on your hair longer than instructions

I am black now. I would like a touch cherry color. What colors do i need.

Asked by: Pathutcheson
You could try using a deeper red shade from loreal hi color reds with foils. Part the of the issue is that color does not lift color so the other option would be to try a demi color in 3RR 4RR or a mix of some violet in there.

I used to use L’Oréal Preference all the time but they dropped the two colors I mixed to get my perfect shade. This line has the colors I want. Would this creme work to apply from a squeeze bottle. I color my own hair and don’t think I can brush it on.

Asked by: Blondie KC
Probably not unless you stirred it exceeding well and cut a larger slice out of the tip. It has a tendency to stay lumpy and, to be honest, I did not find the results as good as the L’Oréal Preference. The applied colors looked drabber than the Preference. I was not very happy with it and went back to Preference.

L’Oréal gray coverage does not say how long to keep the dye in your hair?

Asked by: Joejoegirl
It has stated 35 minutes in the past. My stylist advised that I can leave it on for 45 minutes for stubborn grey. I use the blonde neutral tones and this time works for me. I’ve done it for years!

As a kid I had strawberry blonde hair, more strawberry. As I've gotten older, it's more blond. I'm considering coloring it using this product, the medium coppery red but I'm not sure how it will look. I'm very fair skinned and blue eyes and of course,

Asked by: FrannieH
your best bet is to try a sample spot of your hair, pick an area underneath top layer. For example put up some hair in a clip, then color a strip under this clip. when you are done, check it out in the sun, or light and see if you like it. I found a med. copper red is darker than I thought. hope this is helpful

I have medium brown hair and want to be more of an 8.1, I used the 8.1 with 20vol and it lifted the very dark brown to a medium brown but I still would like for it to be closer to the 8.1 so would using 30vol with it get more of a lift?
