Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great color- lasts longish The best black hair dye I've encountered so far. It's been about a month and it's only just now fading, my hair is collarbone length with an undercut (so slightly less hair) and it neatly covers half my head with one bottle, so if you have shoulder length hair or longer and want to do your whole head get at least 2. the dye is pleasantly thick and has a strongish smell. It doesn't come with an applicator or gloves so you need to get your own.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It’s close enough I’m blonde so I knew it wouldn’t work perfectly but it’s a dark shiny grey instead of black and it’s not ugly so that’s good definitely would try another round of dying it

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does not burn Used Silk Essentials for years twice a week for gray white beard and mustache until got discontinued. Tried few others that were recommended by staff like Bigen permanent(bad burn) and Clairol semi-permanent color both burned the skin. This is the only one so far had no issues. In 25 min it does turn beard darker using black color then Silk Essentials which was more neutral salt and pepper look. Will try adjusting time to see different results.

With the Ion clear semi permanent dye having a strong odor like developer in it, is it damaging? The ones I bought smell like developer. I bought more than one tube and all have a strong smell.

Asked by: NaturalGirl1
I didn’t think the smell was strong. It is not damaging and works well.

If I have naturally dirty blonde hair that can lift without bleach and I use the natural blonde, will this add shine and make my color more uniform and shiny?

Asked by: Ceecee R
It will add shine and make your hair softer and more manageable. As long as you apply your hair color evenly it will look great !! I use a hybrid of two colors ; I mix them together and apply evenly . Always apply more color than you need to ensure full color saturation and evenly distributed ( especially if you have long hair ). With a semi color you can use a comb to apply color threw the hair strands . ( but never use with bleach !!)

Does this clear color strip hair color out your hair to your natural hair

Asked by: Mari1954
No. It's semi permanent. It is mild but also doesn't last long. You don't have to worry about hair loss.

I bought a few tubes of the Ion clear semi permanent and a few tubes of the black semi permanent. All of the clear ones smell like developer are in them but the black semi permanents don’t smell strong like that. What is the difference in ingredients?

Asked by: NaturalGirl1
I have not tried the clear semi permanent but the reason I use the black semi permanents is because I am allergic to p-phenylenediamine (basically regular hair dye) and so far this is the only product I can tolerate. Perhaps this is the reason for the difference in smell.

I know this semi-perm color doesn't require developer, but CAN I use developer if I want to lift my current color a bit? I've considered doing a quick bleach bath beforehand instead, but I'd prefer to just mix in a 20 or 30 if possible

Asked by: MrsKroll
I would bleach or lift your hair color first. Developer in the semi permanent color will only dilute the color intensity. I learned this from several youtube videos that conditioner and developer in semi perm color doesn't produce the color level you may want.

How can l aply ? It need mixed whit peroxide?

Asked by: Maria cg
No, you do not mix Ion Semi-Permanent with peroxide. It only lasts about 4-5 shampoos and the idea is to apply it about once a week. Remember the old ladies who get a "shampoo and set" at the salon? They use this stuff rather than permanent.

I find that the black is a shade too dark.  Wondering if I mixed some clear with it it would soften the color a bit?

Asked by: MollyJul
It might, but it might make the black seem more blue. I would mix the black with brown to reduce the darkness but keep the color looking natural but not as deep black.

How often can you use the clear gloss and does it damage your hair?

Asked by: Skyflann
I've never used the clear gloss, but if it's like the colors, I don't think it would damage your hair and would, in fact, make it soft, shiny, and full of body. I love the way the colors make my hair feel and look. What I like most about this line is that there is no ammonia or peroxide in the products -- nothing to damage the hair.

What will the color look like, with light auborn hair

Asked by: Renelle69
Not sure, what color are you putting on it. I was not happy with this product. It was more permanent than I thought. My hair turned red, then pink. It has finally grown out, but took forever.

How long does this stay in hair till can be rinsed out and styled

Asked by: Liskendrick
At least 30 mins, the longer the better and darker. Best is to rinse only and condition but don't wash for a day or two it will stay in longer. Washes out after 5-6 washes for me.

I have dark brown hair naturally with some balayage. The bayalage has turned brassy / orangy and now I'm over it and want it to be darker. If I use this the warm / medium will I achieve this? I want a little of the lightness to show at the ends.

Asked by: AKR12219
The warm colors leave me with a very distinct redness to my hair, especially in light!  I would call ion color experts, they were very helpful with deciding which color and how to mix colors!

Asked by: issa____

If I use ion in black semi to cover a temp purple that has faded to blue will it fade to grey? Should I dilute it to look grey and not black?

Asked by: Allicatx3
I would leave it black and it will fade out gradually with the rest of your hair. This product blends with your natural hair and is very easy to use.

I have light brown hair with gray at the temples and all over, what color should I use? I would like a golden blond highlight effect. Can it be used alone just the tube or Does it have to be mixed with a developer?

Asked by: Lily sky
You don't have to use a developer. This color is semi-permanent and has no ammonia or peroxide. They no longer offer a light brown. I use medium warm brown, but it is pretty dark now. They have one blond shade. You could try mixing some of the brown in with the blond.

Whats the best color to use to cover grey to dark brown hair? I'm growing out my grey and I want to cover my grey to hide the demarcation line.

Asked by: Ida LipLa
If you are looking for a brand suggestion either Perfect Intensity or Ion are very good. If you are asking how to best grow out your natural gray if you have been dying dark brown I would recommend having a professional do a color stripper or bleach then you can use any lighter color of semi perm you would like until enough grow out has occurred so you can stop. This is how I approached the same situation. Keep in mind semi perm is essentially a stain and will fade from gray quickly, but with an overall lighter color I have found it blends well (I have been using Perfect Intensity brights having fun with blue, purple, and magenta). There has been amazing improvements in lightening products so don’t be afraid of damaging your hair, just don’t try to do it yourself with something available online, it is worth the money to get professional help on that part. Good luck!

I have permanent color light brown how can l use it

Asked by: Dany2015
The semi permanent color u r trying to use has to be darker than your light brown or it won't show much, it would just b faint tones other wise, if the color u selected is at least the same or darker than the light brown , just follow the directions on the box, it's not going to b that exact color since it's a semi, it's deposit only, no lifting, if u want that exact color u must first bleach out your light brown, that will weaken your hair, so u would want to b prepared once your done with your coloring to do some heavy duty conditioning, vwith repairing conditioners, leave in conditions intense packets, depending on which bleach you would select, I prefer the blue based powders, you would follow the directions on the bleach packet, if u HV long hair get a a bucket one, a packet is not enough. I hope I helped some, that I understood your question properly, good luck with what u choose, I have a rainbow of vivid colors, it can b fun, it took me a few months to get it where I am completely happy with it, I have long thick hair so I to condition well regardless if I had any bleached areas, cz if the courseness of my hair, I have dry hair too, so I don't shampoo every wash, just condition, if u HV norto oiky hair u can't get away without shampooing every wash... okay good luck
