Rated 2 out of 5 by from Where is the blonde semi permanent? I loved the blonde shade, it blended my grey beautifully. Now I can’t seem to get it online or in stores. I have tried other brands that just don’t seem to last more than a couple of shampoos. Sally, please please bring back my color!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a lovefest. I love this product. I have been using this product for the past 2 years. I am pleased with the ease of applying this cream to my hair. My hair is short, therefore one tube lasts me for about 3-4 months. It's a semi- permanent hair color, but it lasts a long time. I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Gray Coverage I was very pleased with Ion's black semi-permanent hair color. I followed the instructions provided on the box regarding gray coverage (cover with a plastic cap and apply heat via a hooded hair dryer) and the gray was fully covered. I typically use Clairol's Natural Instincts-a great demi permanent hair color line-but I prefer using a semi-permanent color if it works. NOTE: I have thick, low porosity hair; therefore, I exceeded the recommended time during the heat application in order to achieve my results (exceed the recommended time if products do not penetrate your hair shaft well).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ruined my hair This is the only semi permanent black hair dye that I cannot get out of my hair. I bought it to try out a dark color thinking that it would last only a few weeks (a month at the most). Here I am 4 months later and it's still there and I can't get it out. I'm stuck with a dark purple color.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Builds up quickly Great coverage but remember to use a water base color remover when it looks faded before reapplying or you will get s much darker color. If its a darker shade you want then no problem. It builds up very evenly but i recommend not to apply to many times before removing or you will end up bleching it remove as i did after six months.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from even color from root to tip-hair smooth There are pros and cons and I still have to see how it holds the color. The pros-the color is even from root to tip. It is deep almost dark red but a wash or two should get it to what i like which is a medium.(I think it will be vibrant) The hair is smooth feeling, and none of my natural curl was affected. Also even though my hair is practically down to my waist(but fine) I really only needed one tube. Maybe a touch more. The cons - the tube is very difficult to handle as it starts to wear down because our hands are full of color and they are slippery and slidy and we are trying to extricate more color from the tube. It is difficult. Another con is that the rinse kept running from red to pink and after 15 minutes I had to just quit. The towel is not full of color though. one more con- I got frightened, as a few of my long hairs came out-I didnt know what to expect-but after a while i saw it was just that small bunch and nothing more. I would like to say that i do not feel breakage with this. Looking forward to seeing how things work out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didnt cover my blonde roots at all I usually use the permanent dye from color ion but decided to give my hair a break and use these instead. I used the same colors as I do with the permanent, waited longer than what the instructions said to let the color really deposit... Washed it out and it literally did nothing... I have blonde roots so I'm very surprised there was no change at all, not even a slight tint darker. I used a mix of dark purples so you'd think it would take easily but nope. Very disappointed. Guess I'll have to make another trip to Sally's and get the permanent color like I usually used. What a waste of time and money.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fades very quickly I bought blackest black and it turns out is has a purple undertone, I dont mind this (in fact I love it) but if your looking for something more natural I wouldn't recommend it. The only thing I hate about this hair dye is that, it fades very quickly. It only last about 3-4 washes, which is unfortunate because I love the color.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Brown hair Didnt work well on brown hair. Hoped it would because i didnt want to bleach my hair. Ion is a great brand works well on bleached hair.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not good. I bought the semi permanent color, and once i used it it did not work at all. Actually made my hair brown when I got a purple color. Will not be buying it again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Washes out quickly I used to use permanent hair color but developed an alergy to the current products on the market. I am forced to use the semi permanent stuff now. This hair color is easy to use and doesn't harm my skin. I gave it 2 stars because it doesn't take to my gray hair very well right when I first apply it. Then it fades after the 3 washing...I like it because it fades to a purple hue...I love it is supposed to be black. I have no choice but to use this. I just have to use it more often then most.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ION Semi-Permanent Hair Color I have used this product for many years. It is easy to use, and because it has no ammonia or peroxide, it is gentle on my hair. In fact, it makes my hair soft and shiny. I like the temporary color because it makes my gray roots less noticeable since it fades a bit each time I wash my hair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new HG color. I bought this on a whim at Sally Beauty. I was doing a few other treatments on my hair one Saturday afternoon (Ion crystal clarifying, followed by Aphogee protein 2-step). The Aphogee strips color, and I had planned to color that day anyway, but I needed something semi-permanent so I could use it immediately after the Aphogee treatment instead of waiting 24-36 hours. I bought this in Medium Warm Brown and paid around $6. Product is made in France. It comes in a squeezy tube, and you don't need any extra developer or other products - just apply straight from the tube to damp hair. I finished all of my treatments, towel-dried/blotted my hair so it was still quite damp, and applied this. It needs to be applied to damp hair to blend it in. I strongly recommend you use gloves & a plastic processing cap, because this is messy and it will stain skin and anything else it touches. My hair is about chin-length, but extremely thick - most standard box colors barely have enough product to do my entire head. With this tube, I only used about 1/2 the tube, so I will get 2 uses out of it. If your hair is shorter than mine, or thin, you might get as many as 3 uses. I worked it into my hair, covered with a plastic cap, let it sit for about 20-25 minutes, then rinsed until water ran clear & followed with a deep conditioning mask (my favorite is Cantu Shea Butter deep treatment masque). The color held nicely and my hair felt conditioned, not dry or stripped. Since this is a deposit-only color, it is nowhere near as damaging to your hair as a permanent color. I had some old highlights I was hoping to cover, and they are perfectly blended & completely covered. I also think you could mix a bit of this 1:1 with a conditioner for a sheer color glaze to touch up faded color. I do use a sulfate-free shampoo when I wash twice weekly (I alternate with co-washing) and I did notice a slight bit of color fade this morning in the shower, as evidenced by the rinse water. However, my color is still brilliant & gorgeous, and looks completely natural. I fully expect it will last me at least 2-3 weeks with my washing schedule & method. I think this may be my new HG color.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE this product! This is the best hair color ever! I use Hot Red, which is the exact shade of red I'd been searching for. It's gentle on my hair. In fact, since I switched to this product from professional salon coloring, my hair has stopped breaking. I mix it with a bit of conditioner for easy application, and it's gentle enough to use as often as needed for those pesky gray roots. The bonus is I don't have to wear a gray stripe while I wait for a salon appointment! The cost is minimal, and a tube can last for about a month of touch ups (my hair is longer, so shorter hair would use less). I do a full, overall retouch about once a week. Just mix it with some conditioner, comb through, and let it sit for about 30 minutes. And, if I get busy and don't get it rinsed out right away, it doesn't burn my hair or my scalp. I'd give this ten stars if I could!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I stock up every month - plz don't discontinue) In my journey of turning my naturally blonde locks red, I've tried tons of brands and shades and this is my favorite! I made the mistake of using permanent and demi permanent early on and would never go back. I use Ion Semi Permanent Hot Red once a month and it's good to go. Red dye fades whether you use permanent or not and semi perm will save you from unnecessary damage. My hair feels healthier after I use this dye (it's like a deep conditioner) and the color is perfect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best Semipermanent Colors! So, I use the Ion Semi-permanent Midnight Blue Black (2 boxes) mixed with the Ion Semi-permanent Brights in Sapphire (2 boxes) to get a super dark blue black color. My natural hair color is a dark, ashy brown and this combo took perfectly on my hair! Also, it is long lasting for me as well which is why I chose to write this review (seeing as there are soo many mixed reviews). I shampoo my hair once a week, and my hair was still dark after 2 months when I recolored (most of the blue was gone, but my hair was still black). I do see some of the color rinsing out with each shampoo, but that is expected with semi-permanent colors (hence the nickname "rinse", lol). I do not want to use a permanent hair color on my hair just yet so this is perfect in the meantime. I will say the products can make my hair feel a bit dry after the first rinse, but that was not anything a good deep condition following application couldn't solve. See photos below for my hair color after a fresh application.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fades very quickly! I got this in the colors medium-warm brown and black to mix together. My hair was bleached almost white blonde when I used this. Right after I rinsed the color out it was a very deep brown/ almost black. In the sunlight my hair had a weird purple tint to it. I’ve washed my hair a couple times since I’ve dyed it and my hair faded to a weird greyish- purple.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from it's a good color but... It came off after the first wash, I left it on for 40 min, even though the box said 10-25 min, and it was fine for the first 3 days, but when i washed it with cold water and really fast it all came off

what's the difference between semi and demi permanent color

Asked by: sherry54
Demi permanent lasts longer, but leaves a discernible color line so everyone can tell you've colored. Semi permanent only lasts 6 or so shampoos, and does not leave a line. It washes out slowly and looks more natural as it washes out. It also does not damage your hair as much as demi or permanent color.

Can I add Absolute Perfection Booster Step 1 to this Semi-permanent color?

Asked by: Tere7419
No as this is a semi permanent, its deposit only. You can not add developer of any type, it would most likely change the color to an un desired one. You can add other deposit only semi permanent colors to each other is about it, I e done that with good results. But yeah you can not add a lifter or booster to it. You can however bleach your your hair first then put the semi permanent on top of the bleached hair once it's been washed and dryer for a more vivid result. Hope this helps.

I use the natural blonde. Where is it? I don’t see it as a choice but still in the picture. Can’t find in store either.

Asked by: Tammy L A
It looks like they are not carrying most of the natural colors in the stores anymore. All I can find now are the brightly colored ones, like pink. It’s a shame, but I have had to change brands now.

I have light brown hair with natural blonde highlights. I want to use black for about a week - I was wondering if it goes back to your old hair colors completely once it fades?

Asked by: chrissyxx
That depends on the porosity of your hair. It likely won't fade out completely, if it does, it will take some time and a lot of washing. Semi-permanent usually holds on for 4-6 weeks.

Can this be used to lighten a color prior to applying?

Asked by: westcoast
No, semi permanent colors don't lighten at all, you'd need permanent color, possibly high lift or bleach for that

I have dark brown hair &want fully black hair to cover a few grey hairs but I've seen a few reviews that say the black has a purple hue or fades to purple? How much will the color change? And how often can I dye my hair without doing too much damage?

Asked by: Jennifer94
You may want to counteract the purple hue with an opposite color, yellow. Take a small amount of the blond color semi-permanent hair dye, and mix it with this color. As an example, when using black, I used to get a greenish hue. I added the opposite color of red or brown to counteract the green hue. Just think of the color wheel, and that will give you opposite colors of the base colors. Hope this helps.
