    Other tips:

    • Always perform a strand and patch test.

    • It is often not necessary to refresh the ends of the hair on every permanent hair color touch-up application.

    • For gray, use N shades ( 1N, 2N, 4N, 5N, 6N, 7N, 8N) with 20 Volume TRUE COLOR™ Developer and apply to gray area first.

    •For resistent gray, use NN shades ( 3NN, 5NN, 6NN, 7NN ) with 20 Volume TRUE COLOR™ Developer

•Apply coconut oil (or another barrier cream) around your hairline.

    • Choose a shade 1 level lighter than desired if you are unsure of which shade to use or if you have very few gray hairs.

    • Use an old t-shirt, towel, or coloring cape to protect your clothing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lava Rock Very Dark I used to color lava rock which is supposed to be a medium ash brown to color over my balayage/dark brown that has become very orangey red and dull looking. The pro is that this is a true ash base which is hard to come by. Con is that my hair came out very dark, almost uniformly black and with little dimension in color. i used the 6 developer 1:1. i believe if i try again I will use a shade lighter and a 1:2 ratio which is suggested for soft toning (however these instructions are not on the box). Ive washed 4-5 times with hardly any fading, which i guess can be seen as a pro.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5N Received this product as complimentary. I simply love the color, it turned out like dark chocolate and also love how easy is to do my hair at home. The only thing I would add is an ampoule to hydrate the hair and repair from the process of coloring.

Can Clairol’s True Color Permanent Creme hair color be applied to the hair shampoo-style, as in the drug store boxed color kits?

Asked by: Kjdivagirl
I am not sure exactly what your asking, but I you need to mix it with developer and then you can put it in your hair like a boxed color kit. the developer is not included like in a box kit. directions say 1 part color, and 1 part developer.

My strand test using True Color 6GB gave a medium brown with red highllights. Pretty, but as my own hair is a light mouse-brown, I’d thought to see the golden light-brown shade shown on the box. I used a different brand developer—was this the problem?

Asked by: kjoperagirl
It could have been. I used their developer and I didn’t get any red highlights

I would recommend getting 2 just to be safe. I only use it to retouch my roots, so 1 is enough, but if you what it for all of your hair, it may not be.

hair color that would blend in with my silver gray hair

Asked by: PJPSPICY
I recommend trying Wells Toner T110 , T114 or T118 These are all great for grey/ white hair. It depends on how light or dark your hair is. Use with 10 developer if you want to deposit darker color... 20 to lighten roots a bit if dark or 30 to lighten all over. These are better for silver white hair. 20-30 minute equal amounts of toner and developer.

I'm using the Soy 4 Plex creme permanette in 7A med cool blonde @ 6 NN Dark rich natural blonde and 20v so what would my color be in this new color? They've been good colors but around the hairline it shows the gray before I want it to! Thank you!

Asked by: frosty44
I can't answer your question regarding the color, but can say that I switched from the Clairol permanent liquid to this new product. I found that the colors are more natural and doesn't look so flat. Like you, I wanted to cover grey better and longer. This color does that.

I would like a beige blonde because my hair has a lot of golden in it..so ash turns greenish gray on me and golden blonde makes my hair more golden. What color of the blonde would give me the right color? I have been using the 9N in ION. Thank you.

Asked by: auntbebe
The 10CB is a cool beige blonde. I've used it and 10AV, ash violet. The 10AV is cooler. It will cancel out gold where as the 10CB will keep a little warmth and balance your tones. I think the 10CB with equal parts of color and developer would be the perfect balance.

There is no information about the tones of the True Color line. Did you create a new tone chart for it? Does 9GA mean blonde Gold Ash? I can't even guess what 10CB. The employees at Sally's had a Clariol book but it didn't explain either!

Asked by: KayW3204
Yes, 9GA is gold ash. I'm assuming green undertone, a touch of blue to a lot of yellow to keep it more golden. I have used 10CB and it's a cool beige blonde with a pink tone. It was really pretty!

Agree, when Procter and Gamble bought Clairol and changed the formula, I was out. I bought up all the original formula I could find, but eventually had to switch to Ion. Why does P&G have to ruin everything?

What is the tone difference between 10AV and 10CB? Which one would cut down on orange more ?

Asked by: Janelle 57
The AV stands for ash and violet base. The CB stands for cool and beige. If you don't have to cancel out any orange or yellow tones the 10CB is fine as a base colour; if you do have alot of warmth I'd try the 10AV first.

If I didn't dye my hair, it would be completely white. I love auburn hair and would like to go that direction, but need good gray coverage. It seems any dyes with red in them aren't either an "N" nor an "NN", which are best for gray. What can I do?
