Are sunless tanning products safe?

Sunless tanning products contain the chemical dihydroxyacetone (DHA), an ingredient that has long been FDA approved as a food colorant. When applied to the skin, it reacts with the proteins and amino acids in the skin's surface layer, and produces a brown skin tone. Today's self-tanning products have improved color and application. Test the product first on the inside of your arm to be sure you like the results. Remember, although self-tanners give you the look of a tan, most do not provide sun protection, so don't forget to apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
