What are alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)?

Alpha hydroxy acids, known as AHAs, are a group of several acids—including citric acid (from citrus fruits), lactic acid (from sour milk), glycolic acid (from sugar cane), tartaric acid (from aged wine) and malic acid (from apples)—that bear chemical similarities. Although these ingredients occur naturally, they can also be created in the laboratory, as with most of the glycolic acids used in skin care today. AHAs work on the surface of the skin, causing dead cells to slough off and reveal skin with a smoother look and texture. Scientific research indicates that AHAs may help in reducing wrinkles and fine lines, irregular pigmentation and "age spots", and may decrease the size of enlarged pores. Skin care products containing alpha hydroxy acids can also be helpful in reducing acne flareups.
