What is it?

ion Keratin Smoothing Treatment helps to smooth and soften any hair type into one with luxurious texture and intense shine. It minimizes frizz while reducing curl and texture. Strengthens and reconstructs while protecting from humidity. Contains wheat germ and argan oil and can be used on all hair types. The moisturizing properties of vanillin, wheat germ and argan oil help to revive, strengthen and nourish dry, damaged hair. Lasts up to 6 - 8 weeks*. No Formaldehyde added.

Creates a protective protein layer around the hair shaft, helping to minmize frizz and smooth cuticle without rearranging the bonds in the hair. Does NOT enter the cortex.

Tools required (not included): ion Magnesium Iron or comparable flat iron that reaches 450°F., ion Silicone Styling Comb or heat resistant comb, Hair dryer.

Step 1:
Shampoo the hair with the Ion® Clarifying Shampoo. Shampoo 5 times for virgin, gray or resistant hair. Shampoo 4 times for color treated hair. Shampoo 3 times for highlighted or fine hair. For each shampoo, leave the product on the hair for at least 30 seconds prior to rinsing. (Focus on cleansing the hair, not the scalp).
 
Step 2:
Completely dry the hair using medium heat. Section the hair to begin the application in the nape of the neck.
 
Step 3:
Vigorously shake the Ion® Keratin Smoothing Treatment. Pour 2 oz into a non-metallic tint bowl. While wearing gloves, apply a small amount of the Ion® Keratin Smoothing Treatment in ¼" sections using the enclosed tint brush. Using the comb on the opposite side, comb the smoothing treatment through each section to ensure even distribution before continuing to the next section. Do not over saturate each section. If product remains on the comb after combing section, too much product has been applied.
 
Step 4:
Allow to process for 15 minutes at room temperature for normal hair and up to 20 minutes for resistant hair. After the appropriate time has elapsed, use a paddle or vent brush to blow-dry the hair completely.
 
Step 5:

Re-section the hair. Beginning at the nape of the neck, take thinner sections and begin flat ironing the hair from the scalp to the ends using the ion Magnesium Flat Iron with the temperature set between 400°F and 450°F.

  • For normal hair set the temperature to 450°F
  • For fine hair use temperatures set at 430°F.
  • For over processed hair, set as low as 400°F.

Please note at these temperatures it is necessary to use a heat resistant carbon comb. For optimum results use the ion Silicone Styling Comb.

Be sure to seal the keratin into the hair by repeating the smoothing process with the ion flat iron more than one time per strand.

  • For virgin hair, apply the flat iron 5-7 times per section
  • For color treated hair, apply the flat iron 5 times per section
  • For highlighted hair, apply the flat iron 3-5 times per section

Work your way through each section of the hair. You will see a glassy appearance on the cuticle layer when the keratin has been sufficiently cured to the hair.
 

Step 6:
DO NOT wet, shampoo, or firmly secure the hair with hair accessories for at least 72 hours to allow the hair to be transformed into the desired smooth straight results. If the hair becomes damp during this period, dry and smooth with the ion Magnesium Flat Iron at temperature specific to hair type.
 
Step 7:
It is important to maintain the hair with the ion Keratin Smoothing maintenance products following the treatment. Shampoos, conditioners, and styling products containing sodium chloride will remove the keratin coating from the hair.
 
NOTE: Color services up to 20 volume hydrogen peroxide can be applied same day. Shampoo 3-5 times according to the above directions. Dry the hair 50-100% then proceed with color application. Rinse thoroughly without shampooing or conditioning. Dry the hair completely then continue with the Keratin Smoothing Treatment. If the hair has already been treated with the Keratin Smoothing Treatment, wait 7-10 days before applying hair color. When used with sodium hydroxide relaxers or thermal straighteners it is critical they are applied at least 4 weeks apart.
