What is the purpose of exfoliating and what is the best method?

Exfoliation is the process of shedding the dead cells from the surface of the skin. While it occurs naturally, as the skin continuously renews itself, it is now widely believed that assisted exfoliation is generally beneficial. In moderation and performed gently, exfoliation stimulates circulation, promotes cell turnover, and leaves skin looking smoother, finer and clearer.

Physical exfoliators include everything from washcloths, buffing pads, facial brushes and loofahs to facial scrubs and body scrubs (cleansers or moisturizers that contain abrasive particles or ingredients). Chemical exfoliators include alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. These ingredients are included in a variety of facial cleansers, moisturizers and acne treatments. Another form of exfoliation, microdermabrasion, uses micro-fine corundum crystals to polish the skin's surface. Once only available as a salon service, a version of microdermabrasion is now available for home use.
