Processing times for root touch ups:

Coarse or resistant gray hair (40-45 minutes)

Refreshing the mid-lengths to ends (5-15 minutes)

Tips and Tricks

Crème hair color is best mixed in a tint bowl and applied with an a tint brush. A root to tip color application is not recommended. Always test strand first to ensure desired results!

For superior gray coverage a 20 volume developer is recommended.

If you touch up your roots every 4-6 weeks and would like to change colors you would still only retouch the roots and refresh the ends later in the processing time.

Remember, tint does not lift tint! When wanting to go lighter in shade selection you must remove the previous color first in order to go lighter! If wanting to stay the same shade level or going darker, color removal is not necessary in most scenarios.

1:1 mixing ratio. Two ounces of color to two ounces of 10, 20, 30 or 40 Volume ion Sensitive Scalp Creme Developer. High Lift Blonde series is mixed 1:2 ratio: Two ounces of color to 4 ounces of 30 or 40 Volume Ion Sensitive Scalp Developer. Bowl and brush application is recommended. Always read the product packaging and inserts for complete directions, instructions, and warnings, and make sure to perform both the strand test and the patch test before applying your color.

If have never colored your hair and you want to change your current hair color or you have not colored in 3 months or longer follow these steps:

Apply hair color mixture to dry, unwashed hair

• Work gently through hair as you would a shampoo. Loosely pile hair on top of head

• Process according to manufacturer’s directions. When processing time is complete, add a small amount of warm water to hair and work into lather

• Rinse until the water runs clear.

If you color your hair every 4-6 weeks with a shade of similar tone and level follow these steps:

Make 1/4” partings throughout dry, unwashed hair

• Apply mixture onto new growth area only, working from the front to the back of your head. Leave color on new growth area for 25 minutes. When processing time is complete, add a small amount of warm water to hair and work into lather

• Rinse until the water runs clear.

Other tips: Always perform a strand and patch test

• It is often not necessary to refresh the ends of the hair on every permanent hair color touch-up application

• For resistant gray, use 20 Volume ion Sensitive Scalp® Creme Developer and apply to gray area first

• Apply a stain barrier cream around the hairline prior to application when using dark shades

• Choose a lighter shade than desired if you are unsure of which shade to use or if you have very few gray hairs

• Use an old towel to protect your clothing

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hair turned red/brown I attempted to dye my hair with this color and instead of jet black, it turned my hair brown/red. My roots are dark dark brown and they turned very light. I dye my hair frequently and have never had this happen. I have one half dyed light, and the other was jet black beforehand. I touched up my roots and the color does not match the jet black that was in my hair already in the slightest. Will never use this brand again. It damaged my hair substantially and now I have to use Garnier to fix it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Color!!!! I have been using this for 3 years and use it every 2-3 months. I use 20 devloper. I also use a color application brush. My boyfriend did it this last time and he said it was easy! I had LOTS of gray hair and it covered all of it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Little Gray Is Showing And Its Patchy The jet black was difficult to mix the developer and color together. it starts out very chunky but eventually becomes smooth. After washing it out and shampooing and conditionjng, the color still bled. It didnt stain anything but the color from my hair is all over my towel. After looking at my hair, I can still see some grays showing and my lighter brown hair is a little visible. But maybe I could have let it sit in my hair longer. Overall, the dye isn’t too bad but I’m sure there are better options out there. If you have no other options, I would choose this dye and color. But choose a different brand if you have the option.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible Bought this in sallys, and no one said it would need developer, and since it's black, developer would make literally no since, but when I put this in my hair, even after an hour, no color change once so ever. I've used blue and purple from this brand years go, and it was fine with no developer (makes since) but this sucks, rather swim in an oil spill to dye my hair black, at least that way I'd get a color change.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst color ever, does not cover gray well! I usually get zotos age beautiful jet black cream works fabulous, but my store was out, the store rep suggested this well big mistake, just squeezing it out of the tube was a nightmare and it did not mix well with the developer. It has been 4 days and it already looks like I need to do my roots again.

When using this how long should it set for before applying to the hair?

Asked by: Kitty008
As long as the color is mixed completely with the developer you can apply it to your hair. You don't need to let it sit. For professional advice on this product please contact the ion Help Line at 1-800-859-3112. Our hotline is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm CST Monday – Friday.
