Are Tape In Extensions Bad for Your Hair?

How to Apply Tape In Extensions

When you imagine tape hair extensions, you might imagine hair attached to scotch tape that you stick to your hair. Thankfully, this is not the case. Tape in hair extensions use medical grade adhesive attached to real human hair that can be attached near the root of your own hair.

Extensions are used to make your hair appear longer or fuller while your natural hair grows. Hair growth can be slow, especially depending on your hair type, so temporary and semi-permanent extensions are a good way to get the style you want without waiting.

Tape hair extensions are not permanent hair extensions. Instead they are semi-permanent extensions that last between 4-8 weeks. These extensions are applied with adhesive tape in even rows. Allow at least an inch between the adhesive and your scalp to prevent damage when removing the tape.

You may not want tape extensions to cover your full head. Whether you want extra length or thicker volume, apply them evenly or have them professionally done—especially when it comes to taping extensions at the back of your head.

Should I Get Tape Extensions or Clip in Extensions?

The main difference between tape-in hair extensions and clip in hair extensions is the weight. Tape extensions are lighter, using adhesive tape that grows with your hair and is hassle free to remove.

Clip-in extensions are heavier and can cause thinning hair or even bald areas if you wear them every day. This isn't to say that clip-in extensions are bad, however—you just need to be careful on how much weight you're putting on your hair and how often you're using them.

Take breaks between using extensions, especially if you are using heavy extensions to thicken or lengthen your hair.

It also depends on your type of hair. If your hair is brittle or damaged, we do not recommend using extensions. Even gentle tape extensions could cause damage, especially if they're not applied properly.

Can You Shower with Tape In Extensions?

You can shower with tape in extensions as long as you do so infrequently. Washing your hair too much can make the bonds of your hair loosen and cause your tape in extensions to slip out. When you shower, use a shower cap when not washing your hair. At most, you should wash your hair twice a week with tape in hair extensions.

How to Remove Tape Extensions

To remove tape extensions, you will need the right tools. Do not try to simply pull out tape extensions. Doing so can cause damage and balding.

Instead, the bonds of the adhesive must be broken with the use of a solute. You can use a spray form of alcohol or acetone on top of this solute to help the process. Once the adhesive is soaked and loose, gently remove the extensions by peeling it away from your real hair.

You may need to wash your hair several times to get the solute and glue completely out of your hair.

No matter what kind of hair extensions you use, it is important to be careful and patient. Although you may want to keep your hair looking longer or fuller, taking breaks between using hair extensions can give your hair and your scalp the break it needs to avoid breakage and other issues.
